DOMED PARADISE

An oasis indoors.
A domed paradise.
A forest of trees.
Birds chirping.
Perfect until the snakes.
Slithering from their cages.
Trees uprooting in their haste.
All moving toward us.
Wolf has his surprises.
We won’t wait for any more.

MY FAVORITE REVIEW

Absolutely Addicting!

The Dead Game by Susanne Leist

6476c-cover

I’ve had this book in my Kindle for a while but hadn’t gotten a chance to read until last weekend. My eyes stayed glued to the page even though I was fighting sleep I couldn’t put it down. Susanne Leist has a vivid and wild imagination!

Review

Susanne Leist debut novel The Dead Game is a gripping, terror filled read from the opening!

Linda moves to the small, quaint ocean front town Oasis located along Northern Florida’s coastline. She paints a picturesque scene reminding me of Neptune Beach or any beach further North, I’m a North Florida resident, with the exception of the hill but it’s a book and anything can happen and in this fabulous read it does. As breathtaking as Oasis is the town is full of evil. Protagonist Linda opens a small bookstore and makes friends with all the other young adults in town. There is a distinct separation between the young and the older residents who live on the hill and have creepy green windows. All the young townsfolk are invited to a party at End House, the ultra creepy house at the end of the hill. The spooky fun and games begin here.

The Dead Game is filled with nonstop surprises that kept my toes curled. When I thought they had solved and ended one dilemma another popped up. Deadly twists and turns wreak havoc on the residents of Oasis as supernatural creatures play horrifying games.

Did I mention the vampires? I love supernatural reads and don’t want to read something that’s been done before. Susanne’s take on vampires is fresh and new but you’ll have to read to know. She takes the age old vampire legend and turns it into something I’ve never read before piquing my intrigue. I don’t believe in giving away spoilers but I will say this novel is left with a cliffhanger that has me hungering for a sequel.

Absolutely addicting!

THE OTHER SIDE WAITS FOR YOU

The other side waits for you.
And only you.
No one else will do.
You can run.
But you can’t hide.
It will follow you
until you accept
the inevitable.
Look at your reflection.
See it wither and fade away.
You will be gone.
From this world.
And stuck in the next.
What will you find there?
It’s a surprise.
Aren’t surprises supposed
to be good?
Maybe.
Maybe not.

MEOW!

I know everything.
I know what you’re doing
and what you’re thinking.
Nothing surprises me anymore.
I know what to expect out of life.
All I need is food and a comfortable
place to sleep.
All else is unimportant.
Goodbye silly human.
I need my beauty sleep.
Meow!

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 123

Linda and her friend were on their way to the party at Diane's house. They didn't know what to expect. They didn't expect the armed security and the lit up property.

The drive up the hill was slow: they had to follow a long line of cars and limousines making their way up the narrow country road. At the tall metal gates encircling Diane’s property, each car had to be checked by the guards on duty. Linda caught a glimpse of Diane’s glass house in the distance. It was lit up with bright lights sparkling throughout her property. The lights extended far into the distance, weaving through the many trees and bushes.
At the front gate, uniformed men were inspecting everyone’s invitations. At Todd’s car, Shirley handed the officer her invitation.
“It says here that the invitation is for only one person. Who are these other people?” asked the officer, looking into the carload of people.
“These are my guests. Diane told me that I could bring guests,” Shirley replied.
“I must verify this with the gate house. Please wait here,” ordered the officer before returning to the large gate house.
All the officers were huge and muscular and looked to be very professional. The security seemed more appropriate for an important political event than for a plain dinner party. Linda didn’t like the look of things, and they hadn’t even entered the property yet.
Todd jumped out of his car to speak with the officers on duty at the gate house. After some hushed conversation he returned to the car, informing them that they were cleared to enter. The huge gates swung open for them and he drove up the gravel road between the two lines of tall trees with glistening lights hanging from their low branches.
“Why did they stop us? Why are they checking everyone?” Linda asked.
“The sheriff just wants to make sure that everyone is safe at the party,” said Todd.
“These are not the sheriff’s men, but private officers,” said Mike.
     “I know,” responded Todd.
The four of them in the back seat glanced at each other
with worried looks, but they all remained silent.

WELCOME!

Welcome!
The Dead are waiting for you.
Come in.
The house may appear dark,
but a party is being held for you.
Your host is waiting in the basement.
Ignore the dark pool of water and the cages
and saws hanging from the ceiling.
No need to worry.
You won’t be able to distinguish
reality from illusion.
But this will just make the party
a lot more fun.
Fun for us.

A REVIEW OF MY BOOK

4.0 out of 5 stars Great horror debut, March 10, 2014
By
This review is from: The Dead Game (Paperback)
Susanne Leist does a wonderful job of setting her debut novel The Dead Game, in the sweet seaside town of Oasis, a place where one would never expect evil to lurk.
At the beginning of the book we are dropped into a historical piece showcasing the gruesome capabilities of End house, this sets the novel up nicely for our introduction to recent times.
Oasis is a town which should require little by way of regular law enforcement, but it has suffered a disturbing history of disappearances and unexplained phenomena that have been covered up. Interestingly, the sheriff deputy has a habit of sneaking away when there's work to be done!
The story progresses to tell us a bit about Linda and her perception of the town and its residents. A sense of menace builds quickly and there are surprises to be had when she and her friends accept an invite to a party at End house (unbeknown to them as the locus of the original horrors) A property in which everything defies the natural laws, the friends are subjected to a host of horrors that they try to attribute to mere ghoulish humour on behalf of their host. Vampire, Wolf, sets his eyes on the prize, (Not world peace!) and progressively works his evil machinations against the young people.
In Leist's town we find that humans, vampires and vampire humans have come to coexist.
This is a book where the characters have more guts than sense! and in true horror fashion I read this book on the edge of my seat, willing and hoping for them to seal their fate by disregarding the warnings and jumping into the crises that could have been avoided. I was not disappointed!
Among the horrors, Leis introduces black magic and hallucinogenic apparitions; the walls bleed and pointy cages drop to trap the partygoers, and many other horrors follow. I loved how Linda and Todd's romance blossomed through the midst of it, and how Todd's true nature is hinted at throughout before being revealed.
There are many characters in Leist's horror, and though I could have happily strangled some of them, (Par for the course) I was kept involved in true morbid fascination. I must confess that evil vampire, Wolf was my favourite character in this book, and I was entertained throughout.
This is a must read for horror lovers.

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 97

THE DEAD GAME — DAY 97

They were led to rooms to the left of the main entrance. They entered an empty dining room with green colored wallpaper on its dreary walls. Just like End House with its eerie bare green walls. At the rear of the house was ahuge kitchen, which was empty of any furniture, appliances,or even doors to the cabinets.
“I don’t spend much time at home,” Wolf said to explain the useless dining room and kitchen. He then directed them back through the gallery, to the rooms on the right side of the house. The first room turned out to be a greenhouse, full of plants and trees. The air was very humid and much hotter than the other rooms. The plant life grew wild, without any concern for design or pattern. A narrow path snaked through the thick forest of bushes to the back.
The trees were huge and tall, their tops almost reaching the high domed ceiling. Squawking sounds echoed from somewhere inside the tight growth of trees. Leaves rustled while scurrying noises emanated from inside the thick knots of branches. Shana didn’t see any animals or birds, but only spotted leaves and branches moving in unison with the sounds. She was becoming more and more unnerved by the minute.
Then she heard a weird crunching sound by her feet. She looked down at the floor and was shocked to find alligators snapping at her feet. Their jaws were wide open, their black eyes staring up at her from a deep pool of green water. She jumped back in shock. Then she began to realize that the floor on which they stood was clear glass, separating them from the snapping alligators. She watched as the alligators munched on pieces of food that left bloody trails behind them in the water.
“Don’t be afraid. They can’t reach you,” Wolf assured Shana. As he stared down at her, she noticed that his eyes were glowing bright green.
Like a reptile.
