BURN

Burn baby burn.
Your blood runs hot.
Oozing down the stem.
Dripping to the ground.
Leaving mounds of red.
Where buds will spring up.
And take their rightful place.
In the world of the nonliving,
They will fight for him.
The evil one.
The Dead one.

FACE THE DEVIL

I walk in the dark woods.
Soft cries fill my ears.
The same cries of my nightmares.
I know what waits for me in the forest.
Goosebumps riddle my chilled flesh.
The evil one calls to me.
My heart beats to his drum.
He wants me to join him.
He plays for keeps.
I will go now
and face the devil.

THE DEAD GAME

THE CANDLE FLICKERS

The candle flickers.
The music plays softly.
In an empty house.
The piano keys pound faster.
The wind screams louder.
The games are about to begin.

Welcome to the black saint of death.
Welcome with my last dying breath.
You grant desires and hopeless wishes.
In return we must sleep with the fishes.
Sacrifices are your pride and joy.
Then you treat us like a broken toy.
You stand there with your scythe and crown.
And your dark face bears a big frown.
We haven’t seen you for many years.
Now you are back in our deepest fears.

Lost in her suffering in a town of despair,
Linda knows not how to release herself from here.
She gazes out at the big bright moon,
Knowing full well what it will bring soon.

“Please save us from the evil forces at bay.
We can’t live through this for even one more day.”

Will this night be the same as all the rest?
Fleeing through the night at someone’s behest.
Will they ever be safe again in their beds?
To lie down asleep and rest their weary heads.

BLACK AS NIGHT

Black as night.
Dark as death.
The evil one has come
For me this night.
His eyes shine bright.
He sees me and more.
He walks the earth.
At night he’s the lore.
I cannot run.
I cannot hide.
He knows my secrets.
He knows where I hide.
The roses are wilting.
They crumple in despair.
No colors to lighten their mood.
Only black as they tear.
He has no footsteps.
He walks with the wind.
His body whispers past me.
His fingers brush my face.
He has me in his arms.
We take fight with the stars.
The man in the moon winks.
He takes delight in this game.
I close my eyes in defeat.
Wolf has won yet again.
His cold lips crush mine
As I yield to his touch.

Leading us to the house.

OUR GAMES HAVE JUST BEGUN --- THE DEAD GAME --- PART 50

The winds rush forth with open arms,
Crushing me into a cave of sand.
Darkness rushes to seal me in,
Flashes of light retreating in defeat.

I try to hold onto the reds and yellows,
But they fade into the expanding darkness.
The sand cascades in swirls of beige,
Soft but firm it holds me captive.

My fingers dig into the packed waves,
Leaving evidence of my unhappy plight.
I try to climb the growing piles
That continue to rise in my mounting despair.

My eyes focus on the hole open to the sky,
Desperately seeking a way out.
I am held tight in this evil creation,
A force of nature and hell combined.

A sound slowly creeps in from the opening,
Gaining volume and force on its way down.
It's the sound of laughter and glee
From the creature who desires me most.

OUR GAMES HAVE JUST BEGUN --- THE DEAD GAME --- PART 49

A simple evening walk.
A time to breathe the fresh air.
The streets beckon to me
With their soothing lights.

Yellow glows of love and laughter are
Reflected in dancing spots on wet cobblestones.
Spots of light that I can never call my own
As they bounce away from my reaching hands.

A peek in the windows confirms my suspicion
Of lives lived to the fullest.
Meals enjoyed and savored,
Bringing family members even closer.

I walk alone in the night.
No one's hand to hold.
No meals to share.
My thoughts are all for myself.

I will search for my friends,
Each one of us lonely beings in a small town,
Where family is the desired way of life,
And loneliness is scorned upon.

I am no longer alone.
Footsteps are following me,
The long strides of a man.
Moving closer with each step.
Soon he'll be upon me.

I run down the slippery stairs,
Desperate to outrun my stalker.
He is right behind me.
I shudder before I slip and fall.

I roll down two flights of stairs
To land in a ball at the bottom.
I'm terrified to lift my head
Or check my bruised knees.

Someone squats down beside to me.
An arm encircles my shoulders.
I feel warm and sheltered.
I peek through the mess of my hair,
And I recognize Todd.

A man who has saved me countless times.
A man of few words and no fears.
A man I want to trust but can't.
He helps me stand up.

I am wrapped in his strong arms.
Soothed by his soft voice.
It is hard to stay strong and aloof.
It is so hard to be independent.

He looks over my bruises.
He leads me to the hospital.
A few stitches and I'm free.
Free to leave with Todd.

Todd drives me home to his apartment.
Few words are spoken between us.
We don't need words to explain our thoughts.
A touch, a smile, a wink is all we need.

He puts me into his bed and leaves.
I wait for his return.
I hear him moving about the apartment.
I'm left alone until the morning light.

At midnight, I have an awful dream,
Where Wolf attacks Todd.
He takes me in his arms
And we fly away to a place in the stars.

Wolf has evil inside him.
This evil drives him to do
Unspeakable things to humans.
To me, he's always been compassionate.

Thank god it is only a dream.
It is Todd who walks into the room and not Wolf.
He asks how I feel  and is happy with my answer.
I tell him I'm ready to go home.

His face fills with a scowl.
"You're not safe to be living on your own.
Wolf might return at any moment."

"If he wanted me,
He could've taken me at any time.
But he didn't.
I'm going home."
I gather my clothes to get dressed.

"No! I will stay with you.
Todd stands firm with his hands on his hips.
He must always get his way,
But this time he won't.

We walk by the beach to reach my apartment.
The winds are playing their games again.
The howling winds are shaking the trees so hard
That leaves and limbs flee for their lives.

Wolf appears before us,
Circled by thrashing winds,
Lit up from lightning strikes
In colors of orange, yellow, and green.

He doesn't appear human,
But an omnipotent supernatural force.
He raises his arms to increase the winds.
His shouts intensify the lightning and thunder.

I cannot move.
I'm stuck in the sand.
Todd is trying to move.
Wolf laughs and blows Todd into the ocean.

I scream and scream.
Louder than ever before.
In a higher pitch.
He will not win again.

Wolf saunters over to me.
His swagger sickens me.
He takes me in his arms
And covers my lips with his.

He is taking control of my mind.
My strength is oozing out of my body.
I don't want to fight anymore.
I give in.

Wolf lifts me in his arms
And gives a hearty roar.
He takes me to the skies,
Where others of his kind wait.

I look down to Earth
For any sign of my friends or Todd.
I can see no one.
But I know they won't give up on me.

OUR GAMES HAVE JUST BEGUN --- THE DEAD GAME --- PART 45

Do my eyes deceive me?
Can this be true?
A creature is stalking me
Through the dark streets of town.

Eyes black as night.
Cries as soft as the wind.
Sharp claws tapping a sad melody.
It draws closer to me still.

The mansion's gates yawn open for me.
My feet leave tracks in the mud.
Handprints where I fall in my haste.
Salty tears on the rocks.

The mansion waits in its dark glory
For the innocent and weary.
It sheds its shell like a caterpillar,
But no butterfly does it become.

The creature gains ground.
Stalking in its feline way.
Whiskers in the wind,
Leading its way to me.

One last stumble for me.
My knees graze the rocks.
My fingers climb the steps,
Digging deep into the dirt.

I turn one last time.
The dark one stands up.
Becoming taller and straighter.
On two feet it stands tall.

Its yellow eyes glimmer black.
No whiskers to follow my scent.
White skin for black fur.
Laughter falls from its lips.

He has come for me one last time.
He walks on muscled legs.
Sure and strong is his gait.
For no more does he crawl.

"Come to me!" he says.
"No more games for us to play."
His hand reaches for mine
As I wait for this game to end.

"I refuse to belong to you."
My voice shakes in despair.
I will not be a follower
Of The Dead and long gone.

The house swallows me whole.
I am hidden inside its walls.
A maze of rooms for shelter.
Darkness to shield me from harm.

OUR GAMES HAVE JUST BEGUN --- THE DEAD GAME --- PART 21

The trees of the forest tremble and shake,
Their long limbs drooping in defeat.
Their bodies turn white,
Dripping with frozen tears.

Leaves will no longer rustle in the wind,
Their faces turning to the sun.
Darkness will be their only friend,
Bringing them no relief from the storm.

My world has turned hard and cold,
The brutal wind hitting my face.
I'm surrounded on all sides by white,
My bare feet sinking into the snow.

White covers the trees and grass.
White is the color of the forbidding sky.
White is the color of my nightgown
As I stand shivering in the night air.

My world has turned upside down
Since Wolf has walked into it.
He can't take me against my will
Or can he?

A dark shadow appears between the trees.
A man with a long coat billowing in the wind.
A chilling laugh fills the space between us,
Slithering across the icy surface.

Its tentacles grab hold of me,
Forcing me to move forward.
I dig my feet into the coldness,
But I'm no match for what lies ahead.

TAKE ME TO THE BALL

lifeisthefight:

TAKE ME TO THE BALL

Take me to the ball.
In the round, glass house.
A green ball of lights.
Lit up from within.

Take me to the ball.
I want to dance.
All night long.
Until the sun rises.

Take me to the ball.
Where there’s laughter.
Music.
And dancing.

Take me to the ball.
I come alone.
But I will leave with a partner.
My dancing partner.

Take me to the ball.
A ball given by one of the dark ones.
The walkers of the night.
The givers and takers of life.

Take me to the ball.
And I’ll search out The Dead.
They will walk no more.
And our town will be safe once more.

WAITING FOR YOU

Does End House call to you?
Is it beckoning for you to enter?
The door is opening.
It’s slightly ajar.
The darkness inside
is waiting for you.
Waiting for its next victim.
Are there creatures trapped
in its walls?
Humans caught in its dungeons?
Come inside.
We are all waiting for you.
Candles will light your way.
Down the slippery steps
to the basement.
Or maybe upstairs to
the revolving rooms.
Revolving to reveal
one horror after another.
Come on and let’s party.
The Dead love their games.
Who is their fearless leader?
The evil one controlling the town.
Clues abound,
waiting for you to find.
So many questions.
So little time.

MAN-EATING DAISIES

Excerpt from THE DEAD GAME by Susanne Leist

A field of man-eating daisies? Nothing was impossible at End House.

About two months ago, the mood of the house had turned malevolent. The staircase had flattened itself out during her descent, causing her to fly down their steep slope. Each day afterward brought with it another evil prank against her family.
In the middle of the night, Mary would often find herself roaming through the wooded grounds—without any memory of how she’d gotten there. After she passed through a doorway, she didn’t know what room she would be stepping into, since the rooms often switched locations. Once she’d walked into her daughter’s bedroom and had found herself in a flamboyant boudoir, furnished in red with ornate tables and brocade draperies from a long-gone era.
Yesterday her husband had entered their bedroom and had become lost in a field of daisies. It would have been a pleasant experience for him—if the daisies hadn’t transformed themselves into man-eating plants with long, sharp teeth. She’d found him running through the house, shrieking about killer daisies chasing after him. If she hadn’t been so afraid she would have found it funny, but nothing was ever funny about the house’s long list of evil pranks.
After his heart-stopping experience, John had agreed that it was time for them to pack up their belongings and leave their home.

EVIL ALWAYS FINDS A WAY

The castle’s walls look thick and sturdy.
Ready to withstand any attack.
Ready to protect its own.
But is it strong enough to block
evil from saturating its walls?
Evil can seep in from
the most unexpected sources.
It can take on different forms.
It can travel in one’s heart or soul.
It can disguise itself as love or mercy.
Evil knows no bounds,
for it will do anything to win.
You may strengthen your walls,
but evil always finds its way in.

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 198

The horror at the town hall was over. The residents of Oasis were saved once again. All was good. All were happy. Except for Mike, who wanted a show-down with the demons. He wasn’t satisfied with the easy resolution of their troubles.

Shana felt the creature’s hold on her begin to slacken. She glanced up and saw its body begin to fade until it slowly turned to dust. Then she was falling. She closed her eyes and then felt arms around her. She looked up into Todd’s brown eyes. Wow, he is gorgeous. Now she could see what Linda saw in him. He put her down. He then helped Linda up from the ground, who asked, “Is this finally over? Will others try to kill us?”
“No,” Todd said, “I think we’ve finally rid the town of all the evil creatures.”

The famous last words chanted by every hero. Mike was hoping that there was more to come; he was beginning to enjoy the parade of vampires and their superhuman display of tricks.

THE DEAD GAME -- IN THE BEGINNING

sonnetlx:
Candles by simplysublime
THE DEAD GAME BY SUSANNE LEIST
IN THE BEGINNING

The town of Oasis was plagued by dark shadows. Shana and her friends began to plan their own line of defense. They believed that Wolf was responsible for all the deaths and disappearances in town.

They sat around Shana’s table in the back room with the lights off and the front door securely locked. A small candle on the table provided the only light in the room. Shadows on the walls swayed back and forth with the motion of the candle’s flame. Each time the shadows moved, Shana jumped a little inside, recalling the dark figures that had stalked her in town.
As she stared at the flickering shadows, she hoped and prayed that they would finally be able to rid their town of the menacing beings. Despite the fear racing through her icy veins, she said, “We must confront Wolf on our own! We must learn to protect ourselves without relying on others to deliver us from this evil!”
“Wolf is much too powerful for us to fight against by ourselves!” David said.
But Shana had formulated her own plan and was excited to offer it to the group. “We’ll go up against Wolf in his own house!”
“Have you gone crazy?” Mike said.
“No! Listen to me! We’ll make sure that Todd and Sam find out about this meeting before it happens: this way they can come to our aid.”
“Oh! How romantic!” said Linda, “Knights in shining armor, valiantly coming to our rescue.”
