MY FAVORITE REVIEW

This is still my favorite review of The Dead Game.

5.0 out of 5 stars

There is something painfully wrong about the seemingly perfect town of Oasis

The opening pages of “The Dead Game” grab you at the ankles and drag into the deeper story. There is something painfully wrong about the seemingly perfect town of Oasis. Without getting into spoilers, here’s my take. Leist’s cast of characters are interesting in and of themselves. They do leave you wanting to get to know them better; yet, as in real life you only get to see the sides and masks that others want you to see. That, to me, was the author’s point. Everyone in Oasis seems to have an agenda, and it’s hard to know what to believe. With that in mind, Leist does a great job of bringing to life the picturesque town of Oasis, and the menacing End House. The book is reminiscent of tales like “House on Haunted Hill,” yet with its own twists on the supernatural thriller. The story is well-paced and the dangers faced by Leist’s characters feels terrifyingly real. All in all, a good read. I look forward to reading more works from this author.

A DELIGHTFUL REVIEW!

My Review of The Dead Game by Susanne Leist

by HM Holten

A Haunted House with a Vengeance

Vampires live disguised in a small town in Florida, mixing with the population. Newcomer Linda opens a bookshop and befriends Shana, who has an esoteric shop. There are young men and a blonde bimbo to go out with – and everything is fine until they get an invitation to a party at End House.

In Ms. Leist’s village, there are several unexpected species. The hybrids, half-human, and half-vampire, are difficult to single out. Then there are two groups of vampires, one of them working to protect humans and hybrids. The other group, the DEAD, wants to take over the world and rid it of human beings. Of course, the humans just want to live normal lives. Also, the village, and especially, End house, is full of illusions, some resembling the scary house in a fairground, except for the fact that they are armed with real predators and flying saws just to mention a few. The horror isn’t absent, but it is accompanied by not a few winks. It was an entertaining read that gave an insight into the antics of humans – let alone the vampires.

THE CHESHIRE CAT

Come and join my tea party. Others will be appearing soon. Don’t be afraid to drink the tea. It isn’t poisoned. I promise! What? You don’t trust the Cheshire Cat. I wouldn’t either. Meow!

I’LL READ YOU A STORY

creature reading a book

I’ll read you a story.
It might be too gory
For you to understand,
But I’ll give you a hand.

A blight falls on a town
that will cause you to frown.
Residents disappear.
I want to make this clear.

This isn’t a regular place.
Do not give me that morbid face.
A place of evil creatures
with dark and creepy features.

Dark shadows walk the night,
Giving tourists a fright.
Florida is a scary place.
I will quicken the poem’s pace.

No reason to fear.
The end is near.

TOILET PAPER PANIC

As we pull out our hair,
there’s no paper to spare.

while he’s spreading his fake balm.
We shouldn’t clear the shelves
and think only of ourselves.

A POEM WRITTEN FOR ME! by KENNY MCPHEE — “SPOOKY SUSANNE”

I’m surprised and honored to have a poem written for me by fellow poet, Kenny McPhee.  Most of my poetry is on the spooky side. I began writing poetry as a way to showcase my book. Soon I found I love to write poems. I’ve added nature and inspiration to my repertoire, but I’m basically a creepy poet.

SPOOKY SUSANNE
You enjoy a walk on the dark side, susanne
if you take a train, it will be the ghost train
if you have a dream, it will make you scream
you like to shiver and feel the menace
of demons, ghouls and shady fellers
you’re into stephen king and james herbert
I bet you have a rat for a pet
and paranormal tendencies
Nobody true, they say, but once in a while
a poet can make the spine tingle
with the rightness of his or her words.

May you enjoy the holy terror, my dear,
forever more!

SHY CEMETERY

A cemetery so shy
the dead and gone pass it by.
The graves hide in shame
from its silly name.
No mausoleums to grace it,
or fine tombstones to enhance it.
Please stay away from here.
The dead don’t want you near.

MY INTERVIEW WITH JOHN REINHARD DIZON

I am proud to be interviewing John Reinhard Dizon, a friend and fellow author, who is always ready to have fun and joke around.

John Reinhard Dizon

Image of John Reinhard Dizon

1.   Tell me a little about yourself.

John Reinhard Dizon was born and raised in the Cobble Hill section of Brooklyn, NY. He participated in local and high school sports at Bishop Loughlin MHS, excelling in wrestling, hockey and football. The lead vocalist of the Spoiler and the Ducky Boys, he was a key figure on the Brooklyn rock scene during the Punk Revolution of the 70's. Relocating to San Antonio TX in the 80's, he moonlighted as a pro wrestler while working as a legal assistant. He successfully pursued a BA at UTSA and degrees in Korean martial arts during the 90's. He currently lives in KC MO where he is studying for his MA in English at UMKC. Mr. Dizon has been writing suspense and thriller works for over twenty-five years.

2.    What books have you written? What genre are they in?

I’ve got over twenty novels out right now. I specialize in historical fiction, suspense/thrillers and women’s fiction. My most noteworthy are Tiara and Nightcrawler. My newest one is Standard II – The Citadel  , and soon to be released is Nightcrawler II – Tryzub .

3.    Why did you become an author? What led you down this career path?
I was writing dialogue for my stick-figure cartoons when I first got out of diapers. I got serious after high school but that was before the Internet, so there was no real way to market my work. After living my dreams as an underground rock star, a pro wrestler, a mixed martial artist and a hockey goon, this looks like Turk’s Last Stand.

4.    Was it difficult to write your first book? Or did it come naturally to you?
I wrote my first novella, a train wreck called Enemy Ace, in sixth grade. It was a James Bond knockoff but the major protagonist, Fritz Hammer, appears in a couple of my MI6 novels. Who’d have thought?

5.    What are some of your dreams and goals?
At this age? I’d love to get into one more sizzling romance, make that long-awaited album, and have one last wrestling match. Getting a contract with a major publisher wouldn’t break my heart either.

6.    What do you enjoy to do in your free time?
Get drunk. Sometimes I’ll go carousing with my keyboard player. The rest of the time I’m writing highly controversial manuscripts.

7.   Who inspired you to become a writer?
I had the entire Ian Fleming collection in grade school. I collected Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian series in my twenties. They had the most profound influence on my early years.

8.   Who are some of your favorite authors?

Right now, as a postmodernist writer, it’s Franz Kafka. I spend most of my time reviewing indie novels these days. The lovely Susanne Leist is one of my faves, along with Elle Klass, John Tucker and a few others. I’m hoping an Indie Revolution is going to revitalize the stagnant literary industry worldwide.

9.    What is store for your readers next?
Well, if I’m still above ground next year, I’m thinking of doing sequels to all the novels I’ve got out there. That is going to keep me pretty busy.

WHICH ONE?

Do you want the black house
or the colorful one?
Does the answer depend upon
your personality?
I might have a dark personality
but I’d rather have the colorful house.

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 118

THE DEAD GAME — DAY 118

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 118

Linda and Shana continued their investigation of the town’s residents to find out who was responsible for the disappearances and murders in town.
They continued their journey down the road until they reached the tall black metal gate of the mansion. The house stood dark and bleak on a small rise of land that lacked any form of vegetation among its rocks and dirt. They entered through the open gate.
The property appeared to be deserted and very isolated from the rest of civilization. Shana shivered. The wind moaned, brushing the dirt back and forth beneath their feet like a giant invisible broom. Huge mounds of dust rolled by, resembling a deserted town from the Old West.
Shana heard weird shuffling noises down by her feet. She looked down and was terrified to find two Doberman Pinschers growling up at her.
Both of the women stood still, not wanting to agitate the dogs any further. A tall man approaching them from the direction of the house, called out, “Zeus! Apollo! Heel!”
Shana felt like she’d been in a vampire movie at the bed and breakfast and now she was smack in the middle of an episode of Magnum P.I. At least the man didn’t look like Tom Selleck. He was more of a cross between John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart. He was tall, with a cheerful smile on his face. He looked strong and muscular. He also appeared ageless—like Shirley and Hank—with his thick black hair and unlined face.
The dogs trotted away, their tongues lolling out to one side, to stand on either side of their master. Shana realized that she was able to breathe normally again, now that the dogs weren’t standing so close to her anymore.
“What can I do for you, pretty ladies?” asked the huge man.
“We’ve been having problems in town and were wondering if you were experiencing similar unexplained occurrences out here?” Shana asked while eying the two panting dogs.
“What kind of occurrences are we talking about?”
“Strange shadows stalking us, young girls disappearing from town, and a deadly party at End House that ended in two disappearances…” said Shana.
“Out here it is always quiet, but over the years I’ve heard about the strange events in your town. That’s why I’ve kept away from town and don’t visit any longer.”
“I guess that’s why we’ve never seen you before. What about the couple who own the bed and breakfast? Do you ever talk to them?” Linda asked.
“I met those two a long time ago. I’d found them to be very strange, so I’ve kept my distance from them.”
Shana believed that they were getting nowhere with this man. She wondered if he would let them inside the house to look around. She noticed that Linda was glancing back over her shoulder. However, she was determined to remain here until she found some answers.
“Does anyone live here? Could we come in and see the house?” asked Shana, despite the murderous looks being given to her by Linda.
“Sure. I live here alone. By the way, my name is James. Please follow me and the dogs…they are really harmless, but enjoy barking at strangers.”
“My name is Shana, and this is Linda.”
They followed him through the front yard, which was overgrown with weeds. The tall trees and the rocky ground were bare of any greenery. Shana looked around and saw that nothing seemed to flourish here; even the house looked dead, with its grey walls and grimy-looking windows.
