5 STAR REVIEW OF THE DEAD GAME! LIFE IS GOOD!

5.0 out of 5 stars A UNIQUE BLEND OF SUSPENSE, HORROR, ROMANCE AND VAMPIRES, August 11, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Dead Game (Kindle Edition)
When Linda comes to Oasis, she believes she's fond the ideal town. It's quiet and charming - the perfect place to open a bookstore and make new friends. However, at night the residents are stalked by dark shadows, then dead bodies wash up on the shore and tourists disappear. Linda and her friends realize they must locate "The Dead" just about the time they are invited to End House. When they enter End House, Linda and her friends are trapped in a nightmare. This was one of the scariest books I ever read, and that includes Stephen King! If you're looking for a well-written book that will scare the hell out of you, try this one.

LONG AND DARK ROAD

The road to End House is long and dark.
What will we find there?
Will there be a party for us in the deserted house?
Who are we kidding?
Of course, there won’t be a party or people.
There might be some dead bodies or demons.
Let’s go and find out.

ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK

THE HOUSE IS WAITING FOR YOU

The house is waiting for you.
The spirits are becoming restless.
Doors and windows are opening
and closing, getting ready for
their next victims.
Traps are being set.

ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK

The residents of Oasis
could have used this sign.
It would have warned them
not to enter the deserted house.
The house on the hill with traps,
blood, and body parts.
It was even more foolish for them
to venture down to the dark basement.
A basement filled with water and
secret rooms.
Will they leave alive?

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 146

Todd was hoping that Hayden was still around and hadn’t snuck off into the night as he drove past the thick bushes and massive trees that outlined Hayden’s remote plot of land. He wasn’t too eager to face Hayden on his home turf. He glanced across at Sam, who seemed to be having his own doubts—judging by the amount of squirming he was doing in his seat. They drove up to the house that stood silently waiting for them.
A warm wind was rustling through the leaves of the tall trees that shrouded the bleak house. Low-hanging limbs swiped at their legs with their long, skinny fingers as they walked up the gravel path. The wind blew leaves in circles around their feet, trying to slow their ascent up the steep stairs. They crunched through the fallen leaves to reach the front door.
Todd couldn’t locate a bell, so he rapped loudly with his knuckles. There was no answer. The door began to drift open on its own. A long, dark hallway gradually came into view. Rare masterpieces lined both walls, starkly illuminated against the muted walls by bright spotlights suspended from high above.
The deafening silence felt alive and heavy—as if someone was there with them waiting, but not yet willing to reveal himself. A cold draft hit them. In the translucent stream of air, Todd could see shadowy forms fighting against each other, struggling to break free. “Are those vampires caught in the wind?” asked Todd, beginning to regret his decision to enter the house without sufficient back-up. “Did you notice those strange forms floating in the air?”
He continued, “I’ve never seen anything like that before.” Not hearing a response from Sam, he tried to downplay his concern a little. “It could have been just an elaborate illusion.”
When Sam still didn’t respond, Todd turned around and found him standing as still as a statue, eying the flow of air with fear in his eyes. “Sam? Are you still with me?” Sam didn’t answer or move a muscle.
Todd knew that he had to continue on with the search—with or without Sam. He called out Hayden’s name, his voice echoing down the empty corridor. Still no one answered.
He followed the faintly lit hallway until its end, where it opened onto a huge oval-shaped ballroom. He stood in the center of the room in the bright light cast by the enormous crystal chandelier. The light reflecting from the hanging crystals shot colorful prisms of light across the multitude of artwork all around him. Hundreds of statues by eminent artists were haphazardly scattered about the shiny marble floor; the walls were decorated with priceless paintings in massive frames.
He wandered through the ballroom and recognized Rembrandts, Picassos, and even Renoirs, filling every available space on the gilded walls. At the back of the room, he noticed a circular staircase with elaborate gold railings, leading up through the ceiling to the floor above.
“There are no other rooms on the main floor, so we might as well check upstairs.” Surprised to hear Sam’s voice, Todd spun around to find him standing right behind him. Todd slowly nodded his head in agreement, even though he suspected that this was what Hayden expected them to do next. It was almost if Hayden had put out a sign that read: “Stupid human vampires! Come up my staircase at your own risk!”
As soon as they began to climb the stairs, the air turned colder and more frigid.
     Now, let the games begin.

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 142

The surprises at Diane's party kept coming and Linda didn't know if she could handle any more of them. She was slowly losing control.

A little while later, Linda whispered to Todd, “Can I slip away to the powder room for a few moments? I’ll be right back.”
“Be careful to return quickly without any unnecessary stops to chat with anyone. We must leave undetected, and very soon.”
Linda walked quickly down a side hall to the women’s powder room. The dark corridor was deserted and quiet: the only sound was the click-clack of her high heels on the marble floors. She reached the empty powder room, where she washed her face.
In the mirror over the burnished gold sink, she noticed that her face appeared white and ashen, her eyes troubled. She doubted whether she could pull off the charade much longer of appearing calm and happy. The terror she felt inside was now being reflected in her face and even in the way she moved. Her voice had taken on a new quiver that she’d never noticed before. She composed herself as much as possible and returned to the party.
She was passing the empty tables by the tall windows when she felt her arm being tugged—very hard. Before she could react, she found herself being forcibly dragged through the open patio doors and onto the isolated garden path. She came face to face with the mighty Wolf and his trusted companion, Hayden. The grounds appeared to be deserted: the guests had already retreated from the gardens, leaving her all alone with the two wicked vampires.
Wolf glared at Hayden. “Please let go of her arm; we are not animals. We never force ourselves on women.”
“Chivalry among demons—I’m very impressed. Too bad
your table manners and choice of dishes leave a lot to be desired,” said Linda. Her hatred of Wolf had just caused her to forget her low position in the food chain; she closed her mouth to stop herself from talking. In the future, she must remember that he was a vampire—the strongest one in the world—and that he could easily destroy her at any time.

MY FAVORITE REVIEW!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Haunted Mansion Awaits?, March 22, 2014
By
John R. Dizon "John Reinhard Dizon" (Lee's Summit, Mo United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Dead Game (Kindle Edition)
The Dead Game by Susanne Leist is a psychological thriller set in the small town of Oasis, Florida where Linda Bennett and her friends embark on a haunted house expedition. Her clique of entrepreneurs include Todd Morrison, a roguish fellow who easily navigates among the different factions within the community. Only Linda perceives the fact that Todd and the enigmatic Father John may know something more about the town than meets the eye, and the traumatic events to follow serve to confirm her darkest fears.

The author raises the bar in the Stephen King haunted house genre by combining an illusory backdrop to the standard demon-filled storyline. We are introduced to the evil Wolf, whose Dead subculture threatens to overwhelm those who trespass upon their perimeters. Yet Leist weaves an element of surrealism into the tapestry, creating scenes where each area of the property and room in End House appears to lead into a different dimension. Walls that reach into the sky and floors that lead into the netherworld are just some of the enhancements that Leist has built onto End House, and Wolf and his vampires arrive just as the protagonists appear to teeter on the brink of madness. It is rare when the environment is nearly as overwhelming as the evil that lurks within, but Leist has clearly made this happen in this page-turner.

This is an intriguing spin on the supernatural genre, definitely something to curl up with on book night. The Dead Game by Susanne Leist is a well-crafted novel you won’t want to miss.

THE TELL-TALE HEART

blackoutraven:

Kingdom Hearts

Can you feel your heart beating?
Is it beating too fast?
Do you feel trapped?
That is because you are.
You’re standing in a pool of water,
in the basement of End House,
wearing your party clothes.
But there is no party, no host and no guests.
The door behind you locks shut.
The only way is forward,
through the falling cages
with their sharp edges,
ready to ensnare their next victim.
Circular saws begin to descend,
looking for heads to slice off.
Run!
Run for your life!
The owner of End House takes no prisoners.

THE DEAD GAME

THE DEAD GAME

The house is dark and gloomy.
No one is home to greet us.
Where’s the party that’s supposedly
being held for us?
What is that over there?
A cat with a skull?
Body parts are falling down into
the fireplace from the chimney.
Blood is splattering everywhere.
It’s time to get out of this creepy, house of horrors.
But we can’t!
The rooms are revolving in an endless loop!
We’re trapped!

EXCERPT OF THE DEAD GAME

EXCERPT OF THE DEAD GAME BY SUSANNE LEIST The noose was beckoning Louise from inside the gazebo. She had to enter, whether she wanted to or not. The game was set and ready to be played.      While the drama was being played out by the group upstairs, Mike, David, and Louise were running for their lives through the backyard, past the dark and empty pool that was illuminated from above by yellow lights.      The sky above End House lit up with bright flashes of light mixed with loud rumblings of thunder. Red flashing lights streamed through the night sky, followed by bright yellow pulses of light. In contrast, the sky over the rest of the town remained dark and quiet.      Louise noticed black shapes creeping toward them on the pool deck. She fled down the steep stairs to the beach with Mike and David following close behind. She heard David screeching about flying bats trying to knock him off the face of the mountain. Hard objects swiped at her, almost causing her to lose her balance a few times on the slippery stone steps. But  continued on, refusing to look back over her shoulder to face what or who was attacking them.      She dashed along the beach, feeling as if mounds of sand were being thrust in her face. On the walkway, branches swiped her across the face—like skinny wooden arms struggling to hold her back.     Louise ran down Main Street.  She felt all alone. The streets quiet. No lights or sounds were coming from the empty buildings. She saw candles flickering inside the gazebo. She felt her body being thrust toward the ghostly display of lights. The gusting wind was flinging leaves and branches at her face and around her feet, but still she was being propelled forward.      The gazebo, appearing pretty and tranquil during the day, looked ethereal and unfamiliar to her in the light of the candles. Somehow, the circle of light remained firm and unwavering despite the violent storm raging all around her. She entered the lit circle…all the while knowing that she had just signed her death sentence. She had no control over her actions any longer; she was like a puppet on a string being controlled by a malevolent puppet master.      When she was positioned at the precise center of the circle of candles, dark shapes—similar to the ones that had been stalking her for weeks—appeared around the perimeter of the gazebo. They began circling her. As they circled faster and faster, a strong current of air lifted her up high under the roof of the gazebo. She felt a noose being wrapped around her neck. Then she felt it being tugged tighter and tighter until she could no longer breathe—or even care to struggle any longer.      Without any air left in her lungs…with the world spinning around her…she watched as the shadows slowed down and took on distinct human forms. The figures revealed themselves to be men and women with black eyes, glaring up at her. They were chanting in an unfamiliar language. They were clothed in long black robes, their hoods casting their faces in deep shadow. Long metal chains hung from their necks with huge gold medallions depicting snarling wolves’ heads.      One member of the group—taller and much larger than the rest—lifted arms up high to heaven or down to hell below. In response, the winds turned wilder and more violent, moaning in unison with the voice of the unknown leader. Louise recognized one face right before she lost consciousness, but she knew that it was too late for her or the town. http://www.outskirtspress.com/thedeadgame

EVIL IN OASIS

WHAT EVIL LIES IN OASIS?

How could evil exist in a perfect paradise?
The town of Oasis is famous for its sunshine,
picturesque streets, and white-sand beaches.
Yet evil haunts the streets at night.
Dark shadows stalk the innocent residents.
Tourists disappear from the fancy Oasis Hotel.
In the center of it all, lies End House, with
its long, dark history of disappearances.
Who is responsible for the evil that has
been kept hidden in Oasis?
Who or what has taken over the town
and has the people terrified to come out at night?

I enter the bookstore.
It’s cold and dark inside.
I turn on the lights.
Stacks of bookcases are
revealed in the dim light.
I draw the drapes covering the windows.
The Florida sun flows in, directing its
bright glow on the deserted store.
I can envision couches and chairs
between the huge corner windows,
and a counter by the front door to

Yes, it was all coming alive to me.
A perfect bookstore/ coffee shop.
I can see a peaceful future for me

And these plans were in no way as
peaceful and innocent as mine.
