A PARADISE FROM HELL

mrgif:

Florida may seem like paradise.
Warm tropical breezes.
White sand.
Rolling waves.
Bright sunshine.
But wait until the storms.
The storms arrive
with a vengeance.
With a goal of murder
and destruction.
And what comes with
these winds?
THE DEAD.
They follow on the heels
of death and sorrow.
They destroy
whatever they touch.
So beware of the storms,
for they bring dark shadows.
THE DEAD are here to stay.

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 104

THE DEAD GAME — DAY 104

After Linda and David were gone, Todd quietly asked Sam, “Is everything under control? Can we keep this contained, with everything else that has happened? People are getting too suspicious. This last killing has raised questions about vampires.”
“I’ll keep it contained…I have no other choice. Maybe someone from our group has turned. This has to involve more than one person. This time bite marks have been left behind on a body fully drained of blood. The culprits are either getting more careless, or else they are leaving behind clues because they want to be found out. It’s getting harder and harder to cover up the bodies.”
“I’d like to find the guilty party before Diane’s next meeting. We must deal with this situation quickly and quietly,” said Todd.
He decided that this was a good time to update Sam of recent events in town. He pulled Sam away from the other police officers who were busy examining the crime scene. He began, “I almost lost Linda this week!  She was attacked in the ocean. I wasn’t able to identify the swimmer, since he was wearing a wet suit with a mask. He looked tall and muscular. Unfortunately, this description fits most of the men from town, except for Carl, who is much too skinny. In addition, her store had been almost destroyed by an earthquake-like force, but there had been no earthquake or tremor of any kind in town that day.”
Sam was shocked to hear of these new developments. “This situation is growing worse by the day. Shana also had a life-threatening incident. In the middle of the night I found her balanced on the ledge of the church’s tower…looking like she was about to jump off. Only after I shouted her name a few times did she finally notice me and move away from the edge. Afterward, she claimed that she’d been hypnotized. I don’t understand how she could’ve been hypnotized if I’d been with her the whole evening…just outside her bedroom door where she’d been sleeping….”
“I agree. It had to be someone with great powers, who was able to hypnotize someone against their will, and from a good distance. If he’s from the splinter group, then this will continue to grow worse—unless we stop them for good.”
Todd continued, “Events in town have taken a shocking turn: becoming more unexplainable and hinting more of the supernatural. David and Mike complained about bat-like creatures attacking them on the cliff below End House, and then at Wolf’s house, we were attacked by a cave full of bats. Did you know that Wolf sits on the board of the company that owns End House? Wolf is someone we should be investigating further.”
“Oh great! This situation keeps getting sicker and sicker. Do what you have to; but don’t get too close to Linda—it could get too dangerous for her.”
“What about you and Shana? Practice what you preach.”
     “Touché.”

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 89

Chapter 15
After Sunday morning services, Linda and Shana approached Father John as he said his usual goodbyes on the front steps of the church. He asked them to join him in his study. They followed him through the main room with its shiny wood benches and ornate statues. The church was bright from the sunshine that shone through its sparkling glass-domed ceiling.
Linda realized that the church and the hotel were the only buildings in town with clear glass windows. She has always been curious about the green tinting on the windows of the homes on the hill. Even the stores on Main Street had green tinting on their windows.
The priest’s study was sunny and cheerful with flowered couches, colorful rugs, and a pretty vase holding yellow daisies on his desk. Mrs. Abigail, the housekeeper, kept the church warm and inviting. She didn’t live in town, but in a small town nearby. She was a vibrant and happy older woman, who took great care of Father John and the church.
Abigail set out tea and cakes for them. She closed the door behind her. She left them alone with the Father; she never intruded into anyone’s business and always knew when to give the priest’s congregants their privacy.
“Father, we’re faced with a terrifying situation in town. Friday night we went to a party at End House, but no one was there to greet us except deadly saws and bone-crushing cages. Luckily, we were able to escape—except for Tom and Edward who were last seen going through a doorway in the basement. Afterward, the doorway disappeared and we never saw them again. Later, Louise—who we thought was dead—came back alive.” Linda stumbled over her words in her haste.
She’d expected the Father to either doubt her words or get angry at her for making up such a morbid tale. However, he just sat down in his chair, nodding his head; he didn’t appear at all surprised to hear about the unusual party.
Father John must be in his late fifties, guessed Linda, but he appeared very strong and rugged-looking for a man his age. He also seemed to be troubled. His eyes darted around as if he expected to be overheard by someone, even though the church was empty and quiet.
