AN ISLAND ESCAPE

An Island Escape

Take me away from a world without color,
A world where life is dull and grey.
I want to swim through the ocean’s waves,
Where rainbows can frolic and play.
The sun’s rays shimmer off the water,
Leaving trails of gold, yellow, and red.
Beacons of light for me to follow,
To a new land where to lay my head.
I fly through the rolling waves,
Touching down on a spot of land.
I am lifted by arms of fountains
And laid to rest on the pink sand.
Turtles scurry away from my hand.
Birds fly around as they have fun.
The waves recede in their farewell dance,
Leaving me alone in the sun.
Who lives on this small island?
It’s time for me to explore.
A hut of branches in a tree.
I must see if there is more.
The steps are pretty steep,
I climb and step inside.
The room is small and dark.
Who knows what it may hide?
I hear footsteps from the room beyond.
They’re coming closer to where I hide.
It’s too late to run for the door,
I must face whoever is inside.
He saunters into the room.
Candles and two places set.
He throws me a big grin,
As if I am his prized pet.
We both wait in silence.
He slowly moves toward me.
“I hope you like my surprise.”
I feel as cold as can be.
I don’t like surprises.
Especially from him.
He keeps me at arm’s length,
Not letting me in.
I lower my eyes
From the fire in his eyes.
They’re consuming me alive,
I’m burning up from his lies.
He makes an abrupt movement.
He strides across the room.
He kisses me with great passion
Under the blood red moon.

PUDDLES OF CRIMSON

colorful gradient 32289

Shades of red fall from the sky,
Reaching the ground in puddles of crimson.
Footsteps of The Dead linger around Oasis.
Taking their victims in their mighty thrall.
Red keeps falling from the darkening sky.
Covering the grass and trees with its hue.
My face burns hot from its touch.
My heart beats blood in quickening tempo.
The Dead are tracking me through the woods.
I will be one with them all too soon.

INTO THE WOODS

The woods hold dark secrets.
Buried beneath the black grass.
Blood red leaves blanket the floor.
A green mist covers all.
Shades of green color the scene.
Gnarled tree limbs reach out to visitors.
Creaking and groaning as they bend in the wind.
Is that a figure in the distance?
Its eyes glowing yellow in the green mist.
Is it friend or foe?
Wretched fingers encircle my neck.
The trees have taken us hostage.
The figure draws near.
It gives a cackle.
Not a good sign.
A pot is set up in the clearing.
Figures are mixing the concoction inside.
I don’t want dinner.
And I definitely don’t want to be dinner.

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 178

They were safe at last. Shirley and her crew of vampires were vanquished by Hayden.

Mike couldn’t believe how everything had been resolved with minimal bloodshed—extremely disappointing for him. Once again, Hayden had stepped in at the last minute to save everyone. His own life hadn’t been changed in any way: he was still living the same boring life in the same boring town. But now he had some new options to mull over: to remain a human, to become a human vampire, or even to become a vampire.

Chapter 33
Once again the basement resembled a plain basement: with pipes, a boiler, and cobwebs covering all of the surfaces. Linda couldn’t figure out how the vampires had been able to distort reality so well that the cobwebs had returned to their same exact locations without appearing at all disturbed. She didn’t even mind that the stairs were wet and slippery— just as long as she was able to use them to leave this horrible place once and for all. She energetically bounded up the stairs, eager to leave the dreadful house forever.

FIVE STAR REVIEW OF THE DEAD GAME

5.0 out of 5 stars A GOOD READ, ENJOYED IT...., May 16, 2014
By
This review is from: The Dead Game (Kindle Edition)
Dear avid Reader, if you do not enjoy the unexplainable, the mysterious, the truly frightening, do not vacation in the Florida town of Oasis where its wealthy show up only after the nightfall, where blood runs under the carpets of the End House. You might never return back home. Forget the white-sand beaches and entrancing sunsets in the advertisements for they are no more than the intentional cover-up of the nightmare, of the Edgar Alan Poe like tragedy, that befell the residents of Oasis. Read instead `The Dead Game' by S. Leist, swim in your pool, bike for your health and stay alive. Let S. Leist tell you the true story of Oasis, of its horrors, a tale of unimaginable dread. And, don't read it after the stroke of midnight. One never knows when the uninvited might show up.

Highly recommended by Steven Nedelton, Author of `Dangerous Trade' and other thrillers

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 141

The party at Diane's house was taking a turn to the supernatural. It was a medley of vampires, human vampires, and humans.

Linda looked around the room but couldn’t find the elders anywhere. They’d disappeared without her even noticing. They seemed too eager to leave the tense scene being played out between vampire and human, preferring to remain in the background. She couldn’t understand how the elders had been fooled by two of their own; they must have remained hidden too long on their mountain—missing all the important signs of trouble happening all around them.
Todd led her over to a quiet corner. “Please return to the dance floor with me.”
The humans and human vampires returned downstairs to join the remaining dancers. This time as Mike and David approached women to dance; they seemed more hesitant and wary over their choices. They were actually treating their dance partners as lab specimens, realized Linda, eyeing them as they held them away from their bodies. They most probably were afraid of being bitten by these beautiful creatures.
As she spun around the room with Todd, Linda searched for the other human vampires from town. If they were really on Todd’s side, then where were they? She wasn’t going to say anything to him about them; he had enough to worry about without her raising additional concerns. And what was a human vampire, anyway? Were they any better than regular vampires? According to Todd, human vampires were still human.
She was tired of worrying about the town and its strange inhabitants. She said to Todd, “For just a moment
I’d like to believe that this evening is magical and beautiful— all that I’d imagined for tonight.” She leaned her head against his shoulder and sighed.
