A DELIGHTFUL REVIEW!

My Review of The Dead Game by Susanne Leist

A Haunted House with a Vengeance

Vampires live disguised in a small town in Florida, mixing with the population. Newcomer Linda opens a bookshop and befriends Shana, who has an esoteric shop. There are young men and a blonde bimbo to go out with – and everything is fine until they get an invitation to a party at End House.

In Ms. Leist’s village, there are several unexpected species. The hybrids, half-human, and half-vampire, are difficult to single out. Then there are two groups of vampires, one of them working to protect humans and hybrids. The other group, the DEAD, wants to take over the world and rid it of human beings. Of course, the humans just want to live normal lives. Also, the village, and especially, End house, is full of illusions, some resembling the scary house in a fairground, except for the fact that they are armed with real predators and flying saws just to mention a few. The horror isn’t absent, but it is accompanied by not a few winks. It was an entertaining read that gave an insight into the antics of humans – let alone the vampires.

THE DEAD GAME HAS BEGUN

takingoffmyhood: stairs

I slip on the steps
and catch hold of the rickety banister.
A single light bulb swings on its chain,
revealing a dark basement ahead.
The door slams shut behind us.
I run to it.
It’s locked.
We move as one.
The floor fills with water.
I’m submerged to my knees.
The walls rattle.
Cages descend on ropes.
As they sway near us,
sharp stakes extend
from the bottom edges.
Circular saws follow them,
swirling between the empty cages.
THE DEAD GAME has begun.

THE GAME IS ALIVE

The stairs lead us to the basement.
Circular saws rotate above our heads.
Traps with pointy edges dangle close.
The door locks behinds us.
The water reaches our ankles.
Three doors appear on the opposite wall.
Will we make it across the water?
Will we ever see the light of day?
The house is alive and winning the game.

HOUSE OF HORRORS

A creepy room in
a house of horrors.
A maze of traps
and skeletons.
A house alive
with evil spirits.
Why did we come,
and how do we escape?

DROWNING IN THE BASEMENT

I’m drowning in a pool of water
in the basement of End House
Can this be an illusion?
The Dead love their games.

HELLO

A party on Friday 13th
has turned into a horror show.
I’m trapped with my friends
in the basement of End House.
The floor fills with water.
Rotating saws descend.
We swim to the other side
and are faced with three doors.
We open one.
Roars fill the inky darkness.
Wild animals pace their cages.
I turn to run.
Hot breath on my neck.
I glance back.
The cages have opened.
A tiger advances.
I close my eyes.
We are doomed to play
THE DEAD GAME.

THE DEAD GAME

I’ve written a new description for The Dead Game.

Let me know what you think.

1 Best bright book cover

Book 1 in Series
Linda Bennett moves from New York to Florida to live a quieter life. She rents a bookstore and makes new friends. The town of Oasis offers white sand and blue ocean with calming tropical breezes. Life is peaceful until the dead body washes up on shore.
Blood soon tinges the water of Oasis a deep red.
Rumors of dead bodies and missing tourists circulate through town. Linda and her friends search for answers. The original residents who live in the woods behind town hold secret parties at night. Limousines pull up to their secluded estates. Colorful lights, music, and laughter drift to town through the humid air.
Who are the late-night visitors?
Linda opens her mail and finds an invitation for a party at End House. Since the last owners vanished, the house stands deserted and broken. Hanging shutters and shattered steps mar the facade of the once elegant, Victorian mansion.
What happened to the family?
Curiosity leads Linda’s group to End House, and a determined Mike. A fearful David tries to sway the group but to no avail. Shana convinces Linda to join them. They arrive at the dark house, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. No one is there to greet them. Lit candles lead to the basement and up the curving staircase. The group splits in two to search the house.
End House has a sinister life of its own.
Wild animals and bloody scenes taunt the terrified group. Traps, illusions, and revolving rooms add to their growing horror. After two of their friends disappear, they flee for their lives.
What happened to the friends?
Linda and Shana discover that their journey to hell and back is far from finished. Chased by supernatural creatures and not knowing whom to trust, they must uncover the one controlling their town.
Who are The Dead? Are they humans, vampires, or both?
Will Linda lose her heart to Todd whom she suspects knows more than he admits? Does Shana fall in love with Sheriff Sam? Do David and Louise stay together as a couple?
The Dead Game has begun.

A HOUSE OF SURPRISES

On a dare,
I came here.
Into a deserted house, I go.
I can’t see if there’s friend or foe.
Windows too dirty to see through the casement.
I’m taking the creaky steps to the basement.
Three empty coffins are in the light.
My heart almost stopped beating from fright.
This is much too creepy for me.
I hope one isn’t meant for me.
Unfortunately, the door was locked.
My only way out has been blocked.
Shadows are moving toward me from the rear.
Their elongated faces show no fear.
I believe I have well-played my last game.
The evil winner could have all the fame.

LOCKED IN THE BASEMENT

Steps lead to the basement of End House.
The door locks behind you.
There’s no way out.
Water fills up to your knees.
Metal cages descend.
Sharp edges extend to catch
their next victim.
You dodge the cages.
Circular saws sweep through the water.
The far wall holds three closed doors.
What lies behind these doors?
Read THE DEAD GAME to find out.

THE ROAD TO NOWHERE
Life takes us on a ride.
A path with no guide.
A ride for no rhyme or reason.
A circle with no side.
A path deep into the jungle.
People passing along the way.
Traps to trip us up.
Lurking demons...

A path with no guide.
A ride for no rhyme or reason.
A circle with no side.

A path deep into the jungle.
People passing along the way.
Traps to trip us up.
Lurking demons held at bay.

The end leaves us with more questions.
Not answered along the way.
A destination with no purpose.
No clarification for our stay.

Time kills.
The Dead kill.
They play no favorites.

WELCOME
Candles climb the stairs.
Sentries of the night.
We’re invited to a party.
Without a host.
More candles line the hallway.
Their lights beckon.
Empty rooms greet our hesitant steps.
An open door leads to darkness.
Stairs leading down.
The door slams behind us.
