A SHADOW IN THE WIND

The castle sits in the woods.

Memories fill its walls.

Echoes of laughter

vibrate the still air.

Whisps of smoke float

between the trees.

A transparent shadow

settles beside me,

with a tap on my shoulder,

a sigh in my ear.

With a wistful smileI say,

Goodbye, my love.

We’ll be together again soon.

A BLANKET OF ORANGE & RED

Among the tombstones,

Butterflies are aflutter.

A blanket of orange & red

falls to cover the green.

Sighs cut the silence

Like a sharp knife.

Beneath the ground,

The Dead wait.

The leaves lift in the wind,

Twirling to form shapes.

THE HOUSE COMES ALIVE

green lips

The house comes alive.
Snakes slither in cages.
Human-eating plants stand at attention.
Tree limbs grab my arms.
Roots wrap around my legs.
What’s next?
Quicksand?

TAKE ME TO THE BALL

take me to the ball

Take me to the ball.
In the glasshouse.
A green ball of lights.
Lit from within.
Take me to the ball.
I want to dance all night.
Until the sun rises.
And The Dead depart.

A PUFF OF SMOKE

Puff of smoke

A puff of smoke.
A flicker of light.
Life is sweet.
Life is short.
Gone in a puff of smoke.
Don’t close your eyes.
The candles flicker.
A life is gone.
Only THE DEAD
have the power.
Only THE DEAD
hold the cure.
Only THE DEAD
know who’s next.

END HOUSE
The house invited us.
We are here for a party.
Time will only tell
whether we’ll see the morning.

THE HOUSE OF EMPTY DREAMS

We walk through the house
of empty rooms.
Each one furnished with
a different period from history.
A dining room that can seat
a hundred people.
A gourmet kitchen that sparkles
white with bare counters.
A crystal chandelier hangs above
the marble...

We walk through the house
of empty rooms.
Each one furnished with
a different period from history.
A dining room that can seat
a hundred people.
A gourmet kitchen that sparkles
white with bare counters.
A crystal chandelier hangs above
the marble floor empty of dancers.
Our guide bids us a quick goodbye.
We are outside again, standing on the
stone and weeds of the driveway.
The house crumbles from the outside,
but inside, it’s ready to hold court.
For whom?
We don’t know.
But we will
Once we enter the deadly game.

FOLLOW THE CANDLES

FOLLOW THE CANDLES
Follow the candles
to where they lead.
Along the dark corridor, you walk,
expecting a monster at every corner.
No one appears.
No sounds break the dead quiet.
Along the corridor, you go,
waiting for something or someone.
You see darkness and candles.
A door appears at the end.
It creaks open.
Do you want to see the other side?
Human nature propels you
into the dark gloom.
What happens next?
The answer is hidden in the
inner recesses of your mind.
Follow your nightmare to its end.
Hurry before you wake.
There’s no turning back.
The Dead are waiting.

THE HALLWAY

Green Hallway

The hallway waits.
It beckons.
It calls to me.
I pass closed doors.
Cries fill the air.
Coldness descends.
Total silence falls.
I inch forward,
step by painstaking step.
I peek into a room.
Wheelchairs fill the darkness.
One chair turns.
The empty seat faces me.
The room ahead
glows green.
I hear voices.
I move closer.
Men in white coats
operate on a skeleton.
They flicker,
fade,
then become transparent.
Time for me to leave.
I’m strapped to the bed.
The men in white coats peer at me.
Too late.
