PREY FOR THE DEAD

PREY FOR THE DEAD

by Susanne Leist

The Florida coast is beautifully evoked by water that ‘shimmered in alternating shades of azure and cerulean blue’ and ‘the scent of zinnias and lavender’ that ‘permeated the gentle wind.'”–Kirkus Reviews

YOU ARE ALL GOING TO HELL

If death and darkness is for you,
then Oasis is the place for you.

A vacation resort where The Dead
have taken over.

They’ve taken over
the residents and tourists.

And then leave their
dead bodies on the beach.

A beach with white sand and
balmy breezes during the day.
Come join The Dead.
They could use more members
to help play their games.

A VACATION PARADISE

Pool

So alone.
Why can’t I enjoy the view.
Blue water cascading over rocks.
The smell of the sea in the air.
A vacation paradise.
My thoughts drift to happier times.
Times of parties and friends.
New acquaintances.
New beginnings.
Where has it all gone?
Gone from my mind.
Gone from the town.
To be replaced by dark shadows.
I can feel them around me,
Lurking beyond the pool,
Waiting for the right moment to pounce.
I refuse to let them get me.
Not this time.
The water does look inviting;
To be cocooned in its warmth.
I feel wet.
I’m in the water.
I must have been pushed.
A chuckle drifts nearby,
Transforming into a hearty laugh.
Is it coming from the shadow above the rocks?
Did it push me in?
I close my eyes.
The warmth.
The safety.
Like a baby
Returning to the womb.

IT IS COMING

It is coming.
To a town near you.
A town on the beach.
White-sanded beach.
Tourists aplenty.
Bright sunshine.
Beautiful people.
Hot days.
Cold nights.
Flapping wings.
It is coming.
Better be ready.

AN OASIS

AN OASIS

Calming blue waters.

Soft white sand.

Reclining on the hammock.

Enjoying the sunshine.

The bright blue sky.

The quiet.

Until—

Until darkness descends upon us all.

The trade winds become violent and dangerous.

Our belongings are blown away.

Sand is flung into our faces.

We must leave and run inland.

Rooftops fly above our heads.

We make a mad dash to town.

The sun hides her face.

Lightning and thunder join the winds

And bombard the shoreline.

Where to hide?

The Town Hall has

Its front door open

And waiting for us.

Inside is dark and quiet.

What awaits us now?

Creatures are attacking the building.

Windows are shattering.

Bats are flying in through the broken windows.

Big furry bats with human faces.

The gates of hell have opened and

Released the most gruesome creatures.

We are all doomed.

EXCERPT OF THE DEAD GAME -- THE MAGICAL DOOR

EXCERPT FROM THE DEAD GAME — THE MAGICAL DOOR

door knocker

A small, petite, middle-aged woman with kind brown eyes and short brown hair, dressed in a conservative pin-striped blue suit, with low black heels, came over to greet them. “Hi! My name is Irene Moore and I’m the mayor of this village. When the killings began some years back in Oasis, Leanne approached me, explaining the situation between the good vampires and The Dead. She told us that it might take some years to destroy all the wicked vampires in town. She offered us a way for us to escape the atrocities that were happening too frequently around us.”

“We accepted her offer. She gave us this door, which opened to any fantasy that the person opening the door wanted to imagine. Whoever walked through the doorway was safe from any violent storm or attack on our village,” continued a tall brown-haired man.

“This is my husband, Jack. He is also the village’s sheriff. He is the one who makes sure that whoever walks through the door comes out again safely.”

“What if a person decides to imagine a horrific scene instead of a fantasy?” David asked.

“Why do you ask such silly questions?” Mike turned to David.

“It isn’t a silly question, because I do have to make sure the scene is peaceful before anyone crosses the threshold. Someone had to remain behind to watch over the door while the villagers escaped through the doorway. It was a huge responsibility that I’m happy is finally over,” Jack said.
“Why is it over?” Todd asked.

“Leanne informed us today that we are finally free of The Dead and their evil games, so we won’t need to escape any longer. We were just coming here to see our door for the last time. Our daughter, Cindy, wanted one more fantasy before it was gone for good,” Jack said with a smile.

Cindy’s laughter could be heard tinkling merrily through the open door. It was the laugh of a young girl who was happy and carefree. That is what Shana wanted for the town and this village: a lifetime full of joy and challenges and many happy endings.

Irene called to her daughter that it was time for her to return. Cindy waved goodbye to her new friends at the carnival and ran back through the doorway to her mother.

She said to everyone, clustered around her at the diner, “That was fun. I will miss the magic door.”

Irene bent down and picked up her daughter. “You will have many more adventures in life that will be real, but it will be fun to remember the fairy-tale adventures that we had behind the door. Now go out and play with your friends.”

Cindy ran out to play. Shana looked across the street and noticed other children also running out to play in the park. These children didn’t need fairy tales, since they had a very beautiful life right here in their village.

“I agree,” said Leanne who appeared behind Shana.  Shana turned around and also recognized Reece and Diane in the crowd.

“I forget that you can read minds,” Shana said.

“Sorry, we were just arriving to remove the door.”

“Could we have a door just like that in our town?” David asked Leanne.

     “Don’t act silly,” Mike said.

“Don’t correct me anymore. If you aren’t happy with Louise and me being a couple, then go find different friends.”

“I’m sorry, I guess I was feeling left out. I’ll leave you both alone if you want.”

“I want you to be friends with both of us. Just lay off of me a little.”

“See. You don’t need a magical door to find happiness. You could find it within yourselves and with the people around you. You just have to open your eyes and your heart to the possibilities.”

With that said, Leanne disappeared with Reece and Diane and the magical door.

The villagers began dispersing, while waving goodbye to their new friends from town. Irene and her husband thanked them for coming and sharing the special experience with them. The couple briskly walked out of the diner into the brilliant sunshine, hand in hand.

A PLAN

Why am I never at a place like this?
Why am I always in a dark room typing?
We all make our choices,
and I have to live with mine.
Maybe…
Too many ‘maybes’ in this world.
I need one ‘could’,
and then I’m off to the tropical island.
On the way, I’ll throw my computer
into the depths of the blue, green water.
Sounds good to me.
Sounds like a plan.

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 202

Todd was having doubts about his relationship with Linda. Life wasn't always perfect in Oasis.

Todd was beginning to doubt the wisdom of his decision to include Linda into his dark life. He didn’t know if he should ever turn her into a human vampire. He feared the possibility that one day she might regret her choice, once she saw how her life had been turned upside down, and once she realized that she had to exist on the dark side with no turning back.
Human vampires had to be extremely careful in order to fit in well with the rest of society—without allowing anyone to dig up their dark secrets. They lived in their own little society—separate from the rest of the world, without truly fitting in with vampires or humans. It was a hard secret to carry around every day. He’d had to carry this secret for years with only the elders and the other human vampires knowing his bitter truth.
Even though he wasn’t a full vampire, the temptation to drink blood was always present. Human vampires could be very easily turned by a vampire. Vampires held the lure of great power and immortality. Once human blood was tasted, there was no going back. The older human vampires in town had turned at the end, and he sadly realized there was no guarantee that any of them wouldn’t turn in the future. Their meager powers as human vampires did not make up for their lack of a normal life, and were nothing at all compared to the almost limitless powers of vampires.
Linda had already fallen prey to Wolf’s magnetic spell, which could mean that others like him might be able to tempt her away from her human side and woo her with the rough, seedy playground of demons—filled with weapons, gore, and sick games. However, as he gazed into Linda’s trusting eyes, he knew in his heart that he had always trusted her and always would. He really didn’t believe that she would ever switch sides. But he still wasn’t sure if vampirism was right for her. She was pure and innocent, and he wanted her to remain that way. Because he wanted and desired her was not a good enough reason to have her give up her life.

WATCHING ME

Who is watching me from the water?
There is something bobbing beneath
the shallow waves.
Is it a person or a sea creature?
It’s coming closer to shore.
I see eyes!
Yellow eyes sparkling in the sunlight.
It has green skin with yellow spots.
I’m beginning to hear the music
from “Jaws” in my head.
My over-active imagination
is in over-drive.
I must run!
Before the creature catches me!
Wait!
It’s just a man rising from the waves.
A man in a wet suit.
All is safe.
The yellow spots must have been
a reflection from the sun.
Ouch!
I’m shot!
He shot me!
He shot me with a spear gun!
Too late.
I’m falling down.
Will I wake up again?
Will I find it all to be a bad dream?
I hope so.

WELCOME TO OASIS, FLORIDA!

Come and follow the trees.
The long line of palm trees
that will lead you to the Oasis Hotel.
A hotel in paradise with airy rooms
and arched doorways.
The wealthy love to visit.
Too bad many won’t return home.
Dark shadows visit at night to
snatch their innocent victims.
Lounging in the sun during the day
could turn to horror at night.
Come and enjoy!

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 184

Linda and her friends were happy that Wolf had been vanquished. However, Mike and Todd knew that there was more to come. And it wasn't going to be anything good for them.

Mike was upset. To this group, a party seemed to be a cure-all for whatever ails you—even vampires. David looked happy again, wagging his long bushy tail with his new lion girlfriend batting her long eyelashes at him. And still, all was not resolved.
Everyone returned to their cars and rode back to town, weary but happy that all the evil in town had been stamped out of their lives for good. They had no idea that they’d all conveniently forgotten about the one person who still remained to ruin their perfectly laid plans.

Chapter 34
Reclining on a beach chair in the sand, with a newspaper lying open on his lap, Todd was observing everyone. Mike and David were busy grilling the meat while Shana, Louise, and Linda were setting the table. They were joking with each other. But he still had a uneasy feeling deep inside. Their enemies had been taken
care of and everyone was safe and here with him; however, he felt like one piece of the puzzle was still missing.
During the meal, Todd remained lost in thought. He couldn’t figure out how Wolf had always been one step ahead of him. His informants had always been already dead when he arrived to meet them. In addition, Diane kept security very tight at the secret meetings at her house, meticulously employing different private security companies each time, but dark, lurking shadows were spotted at these events. Someone had to be leaking inside information to the followers of The Dead. He had told Linda and the others that their parties had never been infiltrated but unfortunately, they had been. In his defense, he had lied only because he didn’t want them to live in fear any longer of their own shadows.
