PREY FOR THE DEAD

The sand is soft beneath my feet.

I’m sure I’ve found a pleasant treat.

A metal door swipes across the sky,

removing the sun from the blue sky.

Trapped in a replica of my town,

I watch the sand become dark brown.

My longed-for peace won’t be won

since I’ve trusted the wrong one.

THE DEAD GAME SERIES

I stroll past the storefronts,

tinted windows mirroring the fading sunlight.

I descend the steps to the beach,

soft sand trickling through my toes.

The sky turns black,

the clouds a dark gray.

The waves thrash in a demented dance,

and the wind propels me forward.

I race to Main Street,

palm trees bowing in unison.

Howling winds toss garbage cans,

and debris coats the streets.

The windows hang broken and twisted,

glass crunching beneath my feet.

The saddest sight is the church.

The once-white church stands charcoal-black.

The Dead are here.

The games have begun.

THE DEAD BY THE SEA

THE DEAD BY THE SEA

Come with me to the pool by the sea.
Oasis is the best place to be.
Relax by the pool or sit at the bar.
Tourists visit this place from near and far.

I think I’ll take a dip in the pool.
I am definitely not a fool.
I’d never pass up a chance for fun
Or a tan in the Florida sun.

Wait! Come and look over here.
I found a book on the chair.
A small town is a beautiful place.
I see the stunned look on your face.

Oasis Hotel resembles this one.
But it isn’t always fun in the sun.
It is a haven for The Dead.
Is the heat going to your head?

The sky is turning cloudy and dark.
I can see shadows over the park.
What’s that standing behind you?
It’s not one shadow but two.

More shadows are coming ashore.
I’m not going to wait for more.
Our destiny seems to be in this book.
I’m leaving now without a second look.

FOLLOW THE PATH

areyou-stillawake

Demonic (2015)

Light the path

through the woods,

where many have gone.

Follow the puffs of smoke

to the end of the trail,

where many have gone.

Climb the broken steps

to the deserted house,

where many have gone.

Descend the staircase

to the dark basement,

where many have gone.

Face the row of doors

on the opposite wall,

where many have gone.

Open the wrong door

to the caged tigers,

where many have disappeared.

A DARK STORY

I’ll read you a story.

It might be too gory

for you to understand,

but I’ll give you a hand.

A blight falls on a town

that will cause you to frown.

A place of evil creatures

with dark and creepy features.

Dark shadows walk the night,

giving tourists a fright.

Florida is a scary place.

I will quicken this poem’s pace.

There’s no reason to fear.

The end is now near.

THE END IS NEAR

We have come together as one,

Humans, vampires, & human vampires.

The last battle on this earthly planet

That will determine our combined fate.

Linda clings to her friends.

Will she choose wisely and correctly?

Will she choose me over The Dead?

FROZEN FOR ETERNITY

Sad expressions for eternity

on frozen faces.

Actual tears mark

their frosty cheeks.

Beneath the music and gaiety

lies an undercurrent of evil.

MY HEART’S SONG

Darkness brings a pall to town.

I turn around with a frown.

Soft footsteps echo on the street,

I know whom I’m destined to meet.

I should have listened to my heart’s song,

Listened to reason and right from wrong.

Quebec will never be the same

once The Dead play their game.

Author Susanne Leist weaves her magic in a story with all the elements to claim readers as her fan, enthralling them. Good and evil vampires battling for domination in Oasis.

Todd, a hybrid, born of a human and vampire love match, has a particular set of rules to follow. Linda, a girl from New York, has a traditional innocent who is ill prepare for the obstacles before her. Is the happy ending she craves outside of her reality? Early on in the meeting between the two, Linda and Todd, each fanned the embers of possibilities.

Taking a deep breath, she dashed to the boardwalk and banged headfirst into a hard chest.
“Are you okay?” Todd steadied her, his hands grasping her shoulders.
“I saw a shadow.” Linda gulped. “It was nothing.”
“Let me walk you home.”
As Linda strolled beside him to the boardwalk steps leading to the apartments, she glanced at his brooding face. “It’s quieter than usual this evening.”
He took her hand as they descended the staircase. “Next time you work late, call me, and I’ll walk you home.” Her hand tingling from his touch, she nodded.

Author Leist develops this diverse cast of characters and their relationships masterfully. The story is engaging in every way if you are a fantasy fan. After reading The Dead Game, you may find yourself believing that vampires, hybrids, and humans coexist in your own town. Each page builds the story to the non-stop suspense ending that you won’t see coming. Recommended for young adults who adore fascinating stories. I added Book 2 to my reading list.

FOREVER DEAD

Why do we love vampire books?

Is it the blood and gore or hot romance?

I read them because no one is dead forever.

Even after vanquished, a vampire can return.

If only life worked this way.

HELL HAS COME TO OASIS

Woven from black sheets of rain,
fear covers in disarray.
Anguished & frozen with pain,
dark petals fall in dismay.
Hell has come to Oasis,
The Dead & gone at its side.
Now hidden behind faces
that are well-known far & wide.
