THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 199
Chapter 35
The sun was rising above the ravaged streets of Oasis. The damage from the raging storm was finally brought to the light of day. Glass from blown-out windows littered the usually sparkling clean sidewalks. Garbage and debris covered everything—like a torn and ravaged blanket thrown over an unsightly mess in a sorry attempt to conceal it. The survivors of Natalie’s wrath picked their way through the large pieces of roof that had fallen into the rooms of the town hall. It was a new day. They walked outside into the dazzling sunshine.
Father John departed to check on the extent of damage that had been done to the church, while the rest of them continued to walk through town.
Todd slipped his arm around Linda’s shoulders as they strolled together to her apartment. Linda gazed at all the empty stores along Main Street that had once belonged to the vanquished human vampires. The town used to be peaceful and serene. Now all she could see was death and destruction. She said to Todd, “I wonder who will replace Shirley, Hank, Minnie, and Frank in these stores? How will new people fit into this strange town of vampires and human vampires?”
“Don’t forget about all the humans,” Todd said. “You, Mike, David, Shana, and Louise are human.”
“I think some of us will be switching over. Shana and Sam look like a serious couple.”
“What about you?” he asked. “Would you be willing to become a human vampire?”
“Are you asking?”
“Of course I am.”
“Just out of curiosity or for some personal reason?” Linda asked.
“I like to keep my options open. In this case, I would like to know what we mean to each other.”
“That answer is much too vague for me. I prefer straight answers,” Linda said. She had grown tired of games, especially the games being played by vampires.
Todd had somehow backed her against a tall tree on the deserted walkway. She couldn’t move back and if she moved forward, well…Todd’s large, muscular body was blocking the way.
They stood in the tree’s cool shade, colorful leaves falling all around them. Staring intently into each others eyes, each one was afraid to make the first move. Todd finally moved closer, encircling her and giving her the long, heartfelt kiss that she’d been waiting for—for a very long time.
She couldn’t believe that he was finally holding and kissing her so passionately. His mouth was soft and hard at the same time—pulling her deeper and deeper into his world of heightened feelings. When he touched her, she felt somehow different—not herself anymore. He took total control of her mind and her body. It felt unbelievably good, but scary at the same time. She still wasn’t sure that she was ready to give up her freedom to be under Todd’s control.

THE DEAD GAME -- A PARANORMAL THRILLER
Edward dove into the water and reached him right before the last saw could finish its final rotation—which would have passed through Tom’s skinny, exposed neck. Edward grabbed Tom by the arm and pulled him to safety, past the sharp, swirling blades of the metal saws.
From out of nowhere, wide stone steps emerged on the far wall. Edward ran up the stairs, with Tom climbing up behind him. A huge metal door in the solid wall opened before them. Neither of them hesitated, but ran straight through the open doorway. The door slammed shut behind them and blended back into the concrete wall.
Louise couldn’t figure out where Tom and Edward had gone. The door was gone and so were Tom and Edward. Were they trapped somewhere? Or were they free outside the house? Would they be coming back?

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 148
Chapter 25
After dropping Sam off at
his office, Todd drove to the Oasis Hotel to confront Judy, Gregg, and Ryan. He
was determined to find out why the human vampires hadn’t bothered to
attend Diane’s party this year and why they’d conveniently disappeared every
time there was trouble in town.
The hotel seemed to be
deserted. People must have heard about the strange events in town and decided
to keep away. If things didn’t return to normal soon, then the hotel wouldn’t be
the only business closing its doors. He was afraid that he’d be living in a
ghost town before everything could be resolved.
He located the three human
vampires, sitting huddled together at the bar, whispering animatedly to each other. This did
not look promising. He interrupted their little meeting. “I was afraid that
something might have happened to you. None of you have ever missed a meeting before. A lot of important things have gone down that you needed to hear,” Todd said as he approached them.
“We’re sorry. Since the
number of tragic incidents in town has increased so dramatically over the past week, we’ve become
more afraid and much more careful,” said Gregg.
Gregg had never before
admitted to being sorry for anything he’d ever done in the past. This sudden
change in behavior had Todd concerned. He answered carefully, not wanting to antagonize
them any further. “If you were worried about your safety, you could have
approached me about your fears, as you’ve done in the past.”
“We didn’t know who to
trust any longer, so we decided to lay low,” Judy said. Todd knew that Judy had
just admitted that they’d even begun to doubt his own loyalty. This made him angry—considering the number of times that he’d saved
their measly lives. Sam wouldn’t be too happy about this turn of events either.
“What have we missed at the party?” Ryan asked.
“Wolf joined the meeting
of the elders as usual, but this
time I confronted him about his personal involvement with End House.
We discovered that he sat on the Board of Directors of the company that owned
the house. He admitted that he’d been the one who’d created The Dead. There
were other clues that led us to believe that Wolf was the one responsible for
all the disappearances and deaths in town.”
“What clues?” asked Judy.
“In the past, the gruesome
events at End House usually involved shape-shifting and illusions, which had led us early on to
suspect demons as the culprits, and not humans. However, after the party, we
searched the house and found computer controls and monitors in the attic,
leading us to believe that humans might be involved. This just added to our
confusion.
“Now we believe that the
computers were most probably designed to throw us off the scent of the real
perpetrators. They wanted us to believe that the whole game was being
orchestrated by humans, while in reality it was actually vampire-driven. Only
vampires—utilizing their own special powers—could have laid out such elaborate
traps in the basement. Humans can’t make water appear and disappear on a whim,
or have dangerous cages and saws materialize and vanish in an empty basement.
“There were clues in the
house pointing to Wolf as their leader. Wolves were portrayed all through End House: in all the
paintings on the walls and in the elaborate, engraved design on the ceiling of
the library. Wolf, being such a vain creature, hadn’t been able to stop himself
from leaving a stamp of his own on the house. We still don’t know how long he’d
been terrorizing and killing humans, since End House has a very long and sordid
history.”
Todd didn’t bother to
inform them about Hayden and his indecision over which side to be on.
“You’ve always been our
true leader, boss.” Todd suspected that Gregg’s statement was most probably
made from fear. Now that Wolf’s role had been uncovered, anyone who’d sided with
him in the past would also be under suspicion. Todd still couldn’t figure out
whose side they were really on, so he accepted Gregg’s declaration of support
with just as much honesty as it had been given.
Todd left the three
sitting at the hotel’s bar while he returned to town. He didn’t want to leave
Linda alone for too long: she and her friends had a habit of getting into too much trouble on their own.

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 143
Linda was pulled into the deserted garden to face Wolf and his side-kick Hayden.
However, Wolf didn’t seem
the least bit focused on her, but troubled over something different. “I didn’t come here to play
parlor games with you. I need you to convince Todd to join with us. He can
never be human or accepted by them. He belongs with us! It makes more sense for
him to stick with his own kind.”
“He’s not like you in any
way at all: he cares too deeply for people and is loyal to his friends. On the other hand, you and
your kind enjoy killing too much and have no feelings whatsoever.”
“Todd will never be accepted
by humans or by his own kind! He will be an outcast with nowhere to go!” screamed Wolf.
“Todd is human and will
always be accepted by humans.”
“Let’s kill her now, boss.
She’s going to be trouble; I could take her away and no one will ever see her
again,” urged Hayden.
Oops, she did it again:
her big mouth had now sealed her fate.
Wolf strolled over to her
with a wicked gleam surfacing in his eyes. “I have a much better use for her in the future. When
she finally comes to her senses, she’ll realize that she will be better off
with a real vampire with limitless powers than with a pathetic human. She’ll
learn about intoxicating love and passion—not the games that humans play that
pale in comparison. Here comes the human. Let her go for now.”
Linda was horrified to
find herself wrapped in Wolf’s strong, muscular arms. She became hypnotized by his black eyes and
tempted by his deep voice. He seemed perfect in every way. Suddenly, she only
wanted to be with him.
“I’ll be back for you,”
promised Wolf as he held her tight against him, whispering dangerously in her ear. ”I love the way you
stand up to me with your flashing blue eyes. Soon you’ll be mine, my beautiful
ice queen.”
Linda couldn’t move; she
was stuck in some kind of trance…she couldn’t leave or even want to leave if given the choice.
His voice soothed her and made her think of love, passion, and great need: a
need that could only be met by Wolf with his expert hands and mouth. She knew
that one day she was going to be with him, to be joined with him.
His mouth lowered onto
hers, drawing her into a swirling miasma of unexpected feelings and desires.
His mouth fully covering hers introduced her to a new realm of pure pleasure. His powerful form enveloped her, making her feel
feelings that were foreign and untried for her. She couldn’t get enough of him.
She tentatively began touching his face and then his body with an eager and
unrelenting hunger.
She didn’t know what she
needed, but she knew that she wanted and desired this beautiful man standing
right before her. Her past life was washed out of her mind, never to be considered again. She begged him to take her with him
tonight. In response, Wolf lifted her in his arms—as if she weighed nothing—and
turned to leave the party. His beautiful face looked victorious and happy. His
black eyes filled with passion. She hoped that it was because of her. Then he
looked down into her small face and gave a hearty roar.
While Wolf carried her in
his powerful arms, a dark shadow swooped out of the house and flew directly at
them. Linda was knocked out of his strong grasp, while Wolf was thrown across
the patio.
She looked up to see who
had attacked them. It was Todd, his eyes a deadly shade of green, standing there
panting. Linda backed away in horror. His eyes clearing, Todd looked
beseechingly at her. “Don’t ever be afraid of me! I’m here to protect you!”
Then he was struck down by
Wolf.
They began circling each
other like two wild animals. Todd thrust his whole body at Wolf, causing Wolf
to lose his balance as they crashed together to the ground. Wolf violently
pushed Todd aside and swiftly stood back up. He lunged at Todd, who neatly
sidestepped his maneuver. Todd quickly retaliated by lifting him high up in the
air and flinging him through one of the glass doors to the house. Wolf rose up,
dusting glass off his clothing; bewildered that Todd had somehow bested him.
He warned Todd, who stood
before him, “We are not anywhere near finished, my dear friend. The next battle
between us will be more private—without so many witnesses. If I were you, I would watch your back…and your pretty
little girlfriend,” said Wolf as he stalked away with Hayden following close
behind. Todd quickly followed.

WHAT THE HELL?
THE DEAD GAME
They stepped into a drafty master bedroom, illuminated
by lit candles encircling the huge canopied bed. The candlelight
created shadows that swayed back and forth across the ceiling and walls.
Linda felt like the shadows were reaching out for her. She backed away in horror, not knowing if she was imagining them or not.
She didn’t want to move any closer to the bed, dreading what
she might discover there. Anything was possible, from what they had
already witnessed in this house. But Todd and Shana kept moving forward. She moved with them toward the bed.
What she found there
exceeded all her frightening expectations. On the white quilt lay a
human skeleton with its arms resting at its sides. The skeleton began to
bleed, slowly at first, and then profusely from the deep gash in its
bones from the long, serrated silver knife sticking out of its chest. In
the stream of blood were worms—scores of worms—inching out from the
deep hole, spreading across the white quilt.
Linda couldn’t believe her
eyes. She gasped. More and more worms were climbing out from the body,
falling in groups from the bed to land on the carpet.
A new doorway emerged on
the far side of the room. She watched the enormous worms spread across
the floor, and realized that their squishy bodies were blocking their
path to the door. They were circling her feet, trying to climb up her
shoes. She stomped her feet to dislodge the worms latching onto her
heels.
Looking over her shoulder,
she noticed Shana backing into a corner. Her eyes appeared huge and
saucer-like as she stared at the worms crawling closer and closer to
her. She wasn’t making a sound, but Linda could hear her shaking—as if
her bones were rattling inside her quivering body.
Impatient with both of
them, Todd dragged them through the swarms of worms. Once they were
outside the room, Linda gave a sigh of relief. The persistent worms were locked in the bedroom, behind the door that had concealed itself into the wall.

WATCH THOSE CRAZY EYES
phototoartguy:
When Linda and her friends entered Wolf’s house,
they had no idea what was waiting for them.
They passed through a gallery of portraits with
eyes that monitored their every movement.
Then they heard splashing sounds below their feet.
Shana looked down and found alligators swimming beneath them.
They were standing on a glass floor above a pool of
alligators, who were feeding and leaving
bloody trails in the water.
After the trees began to lift their mighty
roots to run after them, they knew that they
had to escape this crazy place.
They didn’t know if Wolf was a demon or
an illusionist, but they had to run for their lives.
