LET’S PLAY

Source:

Smoke covers our town.
Shades of purple, green, and blue.
A disguise for The Dead.
It descends in a cloud.
To walk our streets.
To enter our homes.
We have our own tricks.
Our own disguises.
Come and let’s play.

OUR GAMES HAVE JUST BEGUN --- THE DEAD GAME --- PART 42

No where to hide from his wrath.
Hot rain washes the red away.
Hail rains down upon us in sheets.
We've become moving targets.

The Town Halls offers no shelter.
Bright lights sweep the dusty floor.
The winds duck inside for shelter.
Thunder pounds against the locked windows.

We must fight this unnatural army,
Who uses the forces of nature as weapons.
Thunder to crash through buildings,
And lightning to burn down the town.

Wolf has his schemes and tricks.
He plays with illusions and magic.
But this time we will be ready.
No army will get through us.

MAN-EATING DAISIES

Excerpt from THE DEAD GAME by Susanne Leist

A field of man-eating daisies? Nothing was impossible at End House.

About two months ago, the mood of the house had turned malevolent. The staircase had flattened itself out during her descent, causing her to fly down their steep slope. Each day afterward brought with it another evil prank against her family.
In the middle of the night, Mary would often find herself roaming through the wooded grounds—without any memory of how she’d gotten there. After she passed through a doorway, she didn’t know what room she would be stepping into, since the rooms often switched locations. Once she’d walked into her daughter’s bedroom and had found herself in a flamboyant boudoir, furnished in red with ornate tables and brocade draperies from a long-gone era.
Yesterday her husband had entered their bedroom and had become lost in a field of daisies. It would have been a pleasant experience for him—if the daisies hadn’t transformed themselves into man-eating plants with long, sharp teeth. She’d found him running through the house, shrieking about killer daisies chasing after him. If she hadn’t been so afraid she would have found it funny, but nothing was ever funny about the house’s long list of evil pranks.
After his heart-stopping experience, John had agreed that it was time for them to pack up their belongings and leave their home.

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 199

Chapter 35
The sun was rising above the ravaged streets of Oasis. The damage from the raging storm was finally brought to the light of day. Glass from blown-out windows littered the usually sparkling clean sidewalks. Garbage and debris covered everything—like a torn and ravaged blanket thrown over an unsightly mess in a sorry attempt to conceal it. The survivors of Natalie’s wrath picked their way through the large pieces of roof that had fallen into the rooms of the town hall. It was a new day. They walked outside into the dazzling sunshine.
Father John departed to check on the extent of damage that had been done to the church, while the rest of them continued to walk through town.
Todd slipped his arm around Linda’s shoulders as they strolled together to her apartment. Linda gazed at all the empty stores along Main Street that had once belonged to the vanquished human vampires. The town used to be peaceful and serene. Now all she could see was death and destruction. She said to Todd, “I wonder who will replace Shirley, Hank, Minnie, and Frank in these stores? How will new people fit into this strange town of vampires and human vampires?”
“Don’t forget about all the humans,” Todd said. “You, Mike, David, Shana, and Louise are human.”
“I think some of us will be switching over. Shana and Sam look like a serious couple.”
“What about you?” he asked. “Would you be willing to become a human vampire?”
     “Are you asking?”
     “Of course I am.”
“Just out of curiosity or for some personal reason?” Linda asked.
“I like to keep my options open. In this case, I would like to know what we mean to each other.”
“That answer is much too vague for me. I prefer straight answers,” Linda said. She had grown tired of games, especially the games being played by vampires.
Todd had somehow backed her against a tall tree on the deserted walkway. She couldn’t move back and if she moved forward, well…Todd’s large, muscular body was blocking the way.
They stood in the tree’s cool shade, colorful leaves falling all around them. Staring intently into each others eyes, each one was afraid to make the first move. Todd finally moved closer, encircling her and giving her the long, heartfelt kiss that she’d been waiting for—for a very long time.
She couldn’t believe that he was finally holding and kissing her so passionately. His mouth was soft and hard at the same time—pulling her deeper and deeper into his world of heightened feelings. When he touched her, she felt somehow different—not herself anymore. He took total control of her mind and her body. It felt unbelievably good, but scary at the same time. She still wasn’t sure that she was ready to give up her freedom to be under Todd’s control.

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 148

Chapter 25
After dropping Sam off at his office, Todd drove to the Oasis Hotel to confront Judy, Gregg, and Ryan. He was determined to find out why the human vampires hadn’t bothered to attend Diane’s party this year and why they’d conveniently disappeared every time there was trouble in town.
The hotel seemed to be deserted. People must have heard about the strange events in town and decided to keep away. If things didn’t return to normal soon, then the hotel wouldn’t be the only business closing its doors. He was afraid that he’d be living in a ghost town before everything could be resolved.
He located the three human vampires, sitting huddled together at the bar, whispering animatedly to each other. This did not look promising. He interrupted their little meeting. “I was afraid that something might have happened to you. None of you have ever missed a meeting before. A lot of important things have gone down that you needed to hear,” Todd said as he approached them.
“We’re sorry. Since the number of tragic incidents in town has increased so dramatically over the past week, we’ve become more afraid and much more careful,” said Gregg.
Gregg had never before admitted to being sorry for anything he’d ever done in the past. This sudden change in behavior had Todd concerned. He answered carefully, not wanting to antagonize them any further. “If you were worried about your safety, you could have approached me about your fears, as you’ve done in the past.”
“We didn’t know who to trust any longer, so we decided to lay low,” Judy said. Todd knew that Judy had just admitted that they’d even begun to doubt his own loyalty. This made him angry—considering the number of times that he’d saved their measly lives. Sam wouldn’t be too happy about this turn of events either.
“What have we missed at the party?” Ryan asked.
“Wolf joined the meeting of the elders as usual, but this
time I confronted him about his personal involvement with End House. We discovered that he sat on the Board of Directors of the company that owned the house. He admitted that he’d been the one who’d created The Dead. There were other clues that led us to believe that Wolf was the one responsible for all the disappearances and deaths in town.”
     “What clues?” asked Judy.
“In the past, the gruesome events at End House usually involved shape-shifting and illusions, which had led us early on to suspect demons as the culprits, and not humans. However, after the party, we searched the house and found computer controls and monitors in the attic, leading us to believe that humans might be involved. This just added to our confusion.
“Now we believe that the computers were most probably designed to throw us off the scent of the real perpetrators. They wanted us to believe that the whole game was being orchestrated by humans, while in reality it was actually vampire-driven. Only vampires—utilizing their own special powers—could have laid out such elaborate traps in the basement. Humans can’t make water appear and disappear on a whim, or have dangerous cages and saws materialize and vanish in an empty basement.
“There were clues in the house pointing to Wolf as their leader. Wolves were portrayed all through End House: in all the paintings on the walls and in the elaborate, engraved design on the ceiling of the library. Wolf, being such a vain creature, hadn’t been able to stop himself from leaving a stamp of his own on the house. We still don’t know how long he’d been terrorizing and killing humans, since End House has a very long and sordid history.”
Todd didn’t bother to inform them about Hayden and his indecision over which side to be on.
“You’ve always been our true leader, boss.” Todd suspected that Gregg’s statement was most probably made from fear. Now that Wolf’s role had been uncovered, anyone who’d sided with him in the past would also be under suspicion. Todd still couldn’t figure out whose side they were really on, so he accepted Gregg’s declaration of support with just as much honesty as it had been given.
Todd left the three sitting at the hotel’s bar while he returned to town. He didn’t want to leave Linda alone for too long: she and her friends had a habit of getting into too much trouble on their own.

LOST

blackoutraven:

We are lost in End House!
We came to the party with our friends.
We were attacked by circular saws and pointy cages
descending from the basement ceiling.
We made it through the traps to the other side
of the basement.
A door opened in the wall and we ran through.
We don’t know where we are.
Where are our friends?
All we hear are moans, all we see is darkness,
and all we can feel is coldness.
Someone please help us!
The town’s lost friends—another evil game of The Dead.
