ARE THEY WATCHING US?

complexae:
Art of Dying - Vices and Virtues (2011)
Birds soar high above us all.
Over trees and meadows.
Near and far.
Watching us.
Wondering about us.
Are they waiting?
For the right time to attack.
They’re present in my nightmares.
Beady eyes, sharp beaks forward,
ready to attack.
I’m safe.
That is until I close my eyes for sleep.

THE DEAD ARE BEHIND ME!

Dark shadows have been stalking me
every single night.
As soon as the sun sets,
dark shadows appear on the streets
of Oasis.
I can’t escape from them.
Now I have one following me.
It’s followed me from End House.
I knew I shouldn’t have
attended that party.
The party from hell, where
no one was there to greet us
but deadly traps and revolving rooms.
Just when I thought I was safe,
and free from End House,
I have one of them chasing me.
What are they?
Or shall I say, who are they?
They are The Dead.
And they’ve come for all of us.
I can hear it behind me.
Help me!
THE DEAD take no prisoners.

TO BE ALONE

At times we want to be alone.
We search for dark corners to hide.
A place to escape from others.
To escape from our problems.
To escape from mindless chatter.
But then you might find yourself
all alone on a beach.
With seagulls as your only company.
Birds squawking at you for
invading their territory.
Man doesn’t belong alone.

A SPLIT SECOND

You’re taking the road at a high speed.
Listening to the squeal of your tires in protest.
Your tires are nearing the edge,
a steep drop to sharp rocks.
Is this what you want?
Is the adrenaline rush worth
a life of endless pain
or an end in darkness?
You have a split second
to make the right decision.
To decide upon your future.
What choice will you make?

OPEN YOUR PETALS

Open your petals to the sky
and show us your beauty.
A beauty created from within.
A beauty that doesn’t require
bright colors to showcase its art.
A glow clearly reflected in any surrounding.
It can’t be extinguished nor copied.
Shine on pretty flower.

THE DEAD GAME — DAY 164

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 164

Who could they trust? Could their friends, Ryan, Judy, and Gregg, be part of The Dead? Was there no one left to trust in Oasis?
As Sam drove down the hill, he explained their new predicament. “We still have many lingering doubts about Judy, Ryan, and Gregg. They disappeared both times there was trouble: first at End House and then at Wolf’s house. They didn’t even bother to attend Diane’s party, which is mandatory for all human vampires. And today, they just calmly watched through the window as Todd fought for his life, without stepping in to help.”
“So, it’s not over—just when I thought that life was going back to normal,” David said.
“I’m driving over to the hotel to check for them while Todd and Linda search through their rooms,” Sam said.
“I don’t think that we should separate. If they’re part of The Dead, then they’re much stronger than all of us put together,” Shana said.
“Okay, we’ll follow their car to the apartment,” Sam said.
They pulled up behind Todd’s car, which was already parked in front of his apartment. They watched as Todd ran out, clutching a master key.
The four of them followed Todd and Linda into Ryan’s
apartment. It was empty of any furnishings or belongings. The window shades were closed, blocking any light from filtering through. There wasn’t even a bed in the apartment, Shana realized, just pitch-black, empty rooms.
“Do vampires own any furniture? Do they even sleep in beds?” Shana asked while looking around the unfurnished apartment.
“We’re human vampires. We need furniture and beds—just like you do. We also require food, since we don’t drink blood,” Sam said, searching through the empty refrigerator and the bare kitchen cabinets.

CURIOSITY KILLS MORE THAN THE CAT

What’s on the other side?
Strange sounds are emanating
from the thick blanket of trees.
You can only see darkness and
the slight rustling of leaves.
You know you want to cross the bridge.
So you begin the shaky walk across.
The bridge sways with each footstep.
Should you continue?
You hesitate but you move forward
step by halting step.
You reach the other side.
There’s a loud crashing sound behind you.
You quickly turn to see the bridge
falling into the water below.
Now you are on the other side looking back.
You know you want to go back.
But it’s too late.
Human nature might have dictated your wants
but the bridge has dictated your reality.

I LOVE THIS REVIEW OF THE DEAD GAME

5.0 out of 5 stars Vampires and More, October 5, 2014

Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Dead Game (Kindle Edition)
Everyone is a suspect in this story. I love good vampire stories and Leist's work didn't disappoint me in any way. The little town of Oasis has a few very dark secrets. The main character thinks she's finally found the quiet little life that's been on her wish list for a good while. She opens a bookstore. Instead, she finds that the evenings after sunset are filled with stalkers in the form of vampires. Leist has a real talent for physical descriptions of both time and place. Her story is filled with creative twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. I loved it.

A PLAN

Why am I never at a place like this?
Why am I always in a dark room typing?
We all make our choices,
and I have to live with mine.
Maybe…
Too many ‘maybes’ in this world.
I need one ‘could’,
and then I’m off to the tropical island.
On the way, I’ll throw my computer
into the depths of the blue, green water.
Sounds good to me.
Sounds like a plan.

TWO-FACED WONDER

brutalgeneration:
Stingray - French Polynesia (by Jesse Estes)
The two sides of nature.
It reveals a beautiful face to the world.
swimming in the deep blue ocean,
spreading its arms far and wide.
It grins at the fish it passes along its way.
Content with the world.
Comfortable in its own skin.
But swim to close to this creature
and you will likely be hit.
It owns the ocean
and no intruders are allowed.

THE DEAD GAME -- GAME 204

THE DEAD GAME — DAY 204

tumblr_n9naxnxf4u1tanynzo1_500

Chapter 36
At Linda’s apartment, Todd walked in first. Almost immediately his highly attuned senses picked up an unusual scent. It smelled of flowers and cinnamon. He stood still, trying to place the unique aroma. It somehow seemed familiar to him. Linda never wore fragrances and neither did Shana. He looked down the dark hall and wondered who had been in this apartment…or maybe still was? From the living room, he heard a woman’s voice. “Welcome! What took you so long?”
He had assumed that everyone was accounted for in town, but this woman didn’t live in town. Now he placed the scent. He strode into the living room. “You’re not really Hank’s daughter are you, Frances? Is that even your real name?”
“Very astute of you, even though you are a mere human
vampire. My name is Maxell and I am Natalie’s granddaughter,” said the woman with hatred burning in her eyes. “You killed my grandmother and now I will return the favor and kill all of you.”
The woman was beautiful with her blonde hair and voluptuous figure, but underneath she was as cold as ice. Todd understood this.
“Natalie was one of The Dead before becoming a saint.
Are you the same thing?” Linda asked as she watched the slinky blonde move gracefully around the room.
“No, silly human, I am not a saint but the last of The Dead in town. You’ve ruined all of our carefully laid out plans. We were waiting for Wolf and his gang to rid the world of unwanted vampires before we annihilated every last vampire, including all members of The Dead. I would then be ready to ascend to become La Santa Muerte, like my grandmother. We were to be the only true power on earth. Finally we would be free to be worshiped properly and fully by humans.”
Furious that they had another rogue vampire to deal with, Todd shouted at her, “You’re just another sniveling follower. The world will be a much better place with you gone.” He quickly turned to find a weapon, but by the time he turned back, Maxell and Linda had already disappeared together. The living room was empty.
He pulled out his cell phone and dialed the sheriff’s office. As soon as Sam answered, he yelled into the phone, “Linda is gone! Natalie had a granddaughter who’d posed as Hank’s daughter. She is the last of The Dead. This Maxell woman has abducted Linda! We need to quickly rally the forces! Call everyone! We must find them before she harms Linda!”
“Don’t worry. She obviously took Linda hostage as a way to trap us. She’ll hold onto her until she has us,” Sam said.
“Where should we look for them? Do you have any ideas?”
“Natalie loved Wolf’s house. Now that I think about it:
Natalie adored Wolf and his house way too much. Before she became a saint, they must have been secretly meeting there, devising their warped plans. I wonder when Natalie had become involved with vampires; she used to be such a sweet old lady. We should meet at Wolf’s house and see if that is where Maxell is holding Linda.”
“I hope that this is the last of them. I’ll get in touch with
everyone, even the elders. Please don’t do anything rash—like going in without back-up.”
“Okay, but just don’t bring any humans; they’ll just get in the way. I don’t need any more people to worry about.”
“Fine,” Sam said. “I’ll meet you there.”

THE EMPTY STAIRCASE

I close my eyes to sleep,
and what do I see?
The staircase from my past.
The stairs from my
elementary school.
I could still hear children’s voices
as they run up the stairs to classes.
I hear shouts as they run down
into the basement for lunch.
But I can’t see their faces.
I can only hear their voices.
All I see is the staircase,
waiting for me.
If I go back there, will
the dream go away?
Will new faces and voices
replace the old ones?
I’m too afraid to find out.
I don’t want new nightmares
to pile on top of the old ones.
So I’ll just go to sleep, and
dream about my empty staircase.

AFTER THE STORM

The winds have taken their victims.
Tree limbs are scattered across the grass.
A quiet descends upon the land.
Animals begin to peek out from
their hiding places.
Birds begin to chirp in unison,
happy to be free again.
The earth regenerates itself,
preparing for the new day.
Soon the sun will shine.
The clouds will clear.
And all will be right
with the world once more.

WHAT DO YOU SEE?

Look into my eyes.
What do you see?
Do you see a reflection
of yourself?
Do you see what I see
when I look at you?
Do you like what you see?
If not, then there’s still time
to change.
To become a better person.
What do other people see
when they look at you?

CAN YOU SEE ME NOW?

I am hiding.
I am shy.
I am camouflaged.
No one will ever find me.
Except for maybe the fly,
who insists on buzzing around me.
The sun has spotted my spots
with its rays of sunshine.
The bird is eying me with
its black eyes.
But otherwise,
I’m safely hidden from sight.
Hidden from humans.
What am I?
Could you tell what I am?
