Icy cold.

My toes turn numb.

My fingers tingle.

The wind howls.

Sleep tempts me.

But I must continue.

A few more steps.

Silence wraps around me.

I raise my face to the sky.

The colors take my breath away.

Let’s take a walk down the road.
A road that is bordered on 
both sides by flowers.
A cobblestone road
leading down to the water.
Beautiful houses encircle the
lush mountains around us.
Keep following the steps.
All your dreams will soon come true.

Drop your defenses.
Relax your mind and body.
Can you see the garden?
The steps leading up the path?
Climb the steps.
Feel the summer breeze.
Hear the happy chirping of the birds.
Smell the sweet fragrance of the flowers.
Move slowly.
Follow the mood.
The serene scenery.
Climb step by step.
The steps will soon lead you
to a green paradise.
Where hummingbirds flutter past.
Super tall flowers reach high to the sky.
Rabbits scurry between the berry bushes.
How perfect.
How peaceful.
A perfect paradise
for a summer day.

Enticing.
Dark.
Deserted.
Dusty.
Eerie.
So many words
to describe the house
and the winding staircase.
Afraid.
Alone.
Reluctant.
Uneasy.
Words to describe
how I feel inside
as I enter this house.
I will take it step by step.
One creaky step
followed by another.
Until I make it to the top.
What will I find there?
Creak, creak.
We will find out together.
Creak, creak.
Those weren’t my creaks.
I’m not alone in the house.
I’m leaving.

Why make something simple
as stairs into a complicated statue?
Why create a staircase with twenty steps
when it only requires four steps?
As human beings we love to complicate
everything around us.
We search for the complex solution when
the simple answer is staring us right in the face.
Simple can be just as elegant and rewarding.
