PICK A DOOR

A door

You are trapped in the water-filled
basement of End House.
Three doors stand before you.
Will they offer a way out?
A way out of the madness
created by the absent host.
The water keeps filling.
The traps continue to fall.
The circular saws keep searching for heads.
Chopped-off heads to add to their collection.
Pick a door.
Any door.
What lies behind it?
You are only limited by your own imagination.

RED GLOW IN THE NIGHT

Alexander Calder, Sumac V. 1953.

A red glow in the night.
Leading me astray.
Away from my plans.
Toward my doom.
Blood marks the way.
Toward a town on the shore.
Where the undead roam free.
Leaving a trail of bloodshed.
Dead bodies on the beach.
Mayhem their mainstay.
I must not follow this path.
To death and destruction.
For once one is bitten.
It is too late to go back.

5 STAR REVIEW OF THE DEAD GAME

Gripping horror, March 14, 2015

This review is from: The Dead Game (Kindle Edition)

“Beneath the pretty field of flowers growing on End House property, exists an evil so great and powerful that even the elders can’t fight it on their own.” Who are the elders? What is The Dead Game, what is the relationship between the wicked vampires, good vampires, human vampires and what role do spells and magic play in Susanne Leist’s hugely enjoyable horror novel? If you want to learn the answers then you’ll need to read The Dead Game, and if you enjoy this type of fiction then I strongly suggest you do.
The author wastes no time laying out her literary stall. After a gripping prologue replete with bloody tentacles and a swirling vortex Leist ends her introduction with, “No sounds or voices were heard again. End House remained empty until the party five years later that awoke the house to the possibility of new victims.” I especially enjoyed the prologue as I’m not a big fan of the slow burn or the slow build. When chapter 1 begins with descriptions of the quaint shops, pristine white sand beaches, tree lined walkways and grassy town parks of the picturesque town of Oasis we know that this tranquility is illusory, ephemeral at best. When Linda and the others receive invitations to End House the sense of suspense quickly grows and it isn’t long before we’re plunged into supernatural horror once more.
Some books you can’t help but imagine as films and for me, The Dead Game is one of these. I could easily see myself watching something like this on the horror channel or a Fright Night special. The characters are well drawn as are the interactions and interpersonal conflicts but in essence it is the narrative, the “game” itself which drives the tale as the victims wonder if their fate is to “all die in this house, one by one.”
On the whole the novel pretty much played out as I expected and the diabolical vampire, Wolf, was very much part of this. Even the little surprise right at the end wasn’t such a surprise. Yet for me at least, this is not to the work’s detriment. The Dead Game is extremely well written with vivid (often extremely vivid) descriptions, the premise is strong, the central characters well drawn and the actions and reveals continue to build throughout. If I had one criticism it is that of the narrative layering. Linda is the main protagonist and as such needs to be the focus a little more in the story. It is through the central character after all that the reader best experiences the roller coaster of emotions, especially fear and hope, of a horror novel. Although a fan of James Herbert this is an aspect that I never enjoyed of the late British horror writer’s work.
Notwithstanding this minor quibble, if you like this type of fiction then you will love Dead Game. I certainly did.

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 194

They were huddled in the church, being attacked on all sides. Supernatural creatures were threatening to take over their town. How could they escape this last round of horrors?

The whole building rumbled and shook. Oh no, Mike realized, lightning hit the building! He watched as the ceiling began to crumble and bricks fell from the walls onto the ground. A strange sound hummed from the outside, becoming louder and louder. Mike could hear distinct flapping noises. Then the tall windows around the room abruptly shattered.
Swarms of flying creatures crashed through the glass. They were circling above them. They were big, black, and furry. Oh, God! Mike shivered. They were bats! No, something was off about them. They were much too big to be bats!
As the creatures swooped down toward them, Mike realized that they had human faces. Human faces on big furry bodies. It was as if the gates of hell had opened up and released the worst creatures into their world. They continued to fly down at them, over and over again, with their sharp claws extended, grabbing at them.
“Run! I’ll vanquish her again!” yelled the Father.
Mike grimaced. We are all doomed if we have to rely on the Father and his unreliable spells.

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 183

Mike was still confused about the whole vampire situation in town. He confronted Todd. “What about the shadows that were spotted at the time of Diane’s exclusive parties, and each time there was a full moon? Who or what were they? How—?”
Todd said, “At the time of Diane’s parties, members of The Dead roamed the town at night to spy on the visiting vampires and our secret meetings. They were desperate to ferret out information that would help them destroy the peaceful vampires. But we were very careful and they never gained access to the private events.
“As for the shadows recently stalking all of you, they had to have been the turned human vampires from town who were attempting to terrify you. It was part of their grand plan of bringing murder and mayhem to town.”
Louise asked, “How did I end up on the beach after Shirley and her gang had tried to hang me?”
“You can thank Gregg, Ryan, and Judy. After they resuscitated you at the gazebo, they left you on the beach. They also saved David by pushing him down the flight of stairs leading from End House to the beach, so that he would be out of reach of the flying creatures. They were very busy that night, coming to everyone’s rescue. In addition, they led your group to the door in the basement that allowed you to escape from the wild animals.”
Louise ran over to the human vampires. “I owe you guys my life. I am forever in your debt.”
Gregg said, “It was our pleasure; it was just part of our job description.”
Mike sighed. “There are just too many players in this game; it’s much too hard to keep track of everyone.”

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 60

Impatient with both of them, Todd dragged them through the swarms of worms. Once they were outside the room, Linda gave a sigh of relief.  The persistent worms were locked in the bedroom, behind the door that had concealed itself into the wall.
The next room turned out to be a huge library. Its four walls were lined with books, all the way up to the high, carved, domed ceiling.
Todd moved over to one wall of books, withdrawing one book at random. “The books are real in a fake house.”  The book was Grimm’s Fairytales.  He added, “A very appropriate book for this situation.”
He walked over to the desk. “Of course, no papers on the desk or in the drawers.”
Shana was spinning a large globe standing on the floor beside the desk. When she glanced down at it, she was startled to see that the globe portrayed a world without land but only water. “The person running this show has a weird perception of reality. His world consists only of water without land or people. Maybe he wants to get rid of everyone and live on this mountain all by himself,” she said.
“Or maybe he wants to live on this whole planet by himself,” Linda remarked, adding to Shana’s myopic explanation for the reasoning behind the fake party.
