MEET ME AT THE CHURCH AT MIDNIGHT

town hall

MEET ME AT THE CHURCH AT MIDNIGHT

After all the introductions were made, Abe and Anna and their extended family bid farewell to everyone. Linda looked around but couldn’t find Father John anywhere. He had disappeared at some point earlier—after the destruction of End House. He didn’t even stay to meet Abe’s family. This had her worried. She questioned Shana, David, and Mike about his absence, but no one had noticed him leaving. She looked around for him, but had to finally give up and follow the others back to their cars.

Chapter 38

When Abe returned to his house, he opened his hand to reveal the small folded-up piece of paper that Father John had slipped into his palm. The Father had brushed past him just before he’d disappeared. Abe sat on his bed in the darkened room, slowly unfolding the note.
Written inside were the few words “Meet me at midnight at the church.”
He wasn’t too eager to visit the church so late. But he had no choice.
Later, when everyone was asleep, Abe left the house and walked to town. He approached the church and saw for the first time the utter devastation the last storm had bestowed on the beautiful building. The once-white church was now darkened to almost black. All of its windows had been blown out and its roof had caved in. The tall bell tower was no longer visible; it must be lying somewhere amidst the rubble of the building’s interior.
He didn’t see the priest anywhere outside, so he walked through the doorway or what had been the doorway. He climbed over large pieces of wood that must have been the front doors.
Inside, nothing remained standing. Statues lay smashed on the ground. The pews had been crushed flat by the fallen roof. Even the stained-glass windows had been shattered to pieces. As he was lamenting over this terrible loss, he heard a shuffling noise behind him. He turned around to find the Father walking toward him.

A REVIEW TO DIE FOR

                                   THE DEAD GAME

There is something painfully wrong about the seemingly perfect town of Oasis
The opening pages of "The Dead Game" grab you at the ankles and drag into the deeper story. There is something painfully wrong about the seemingly perfect town of Oasis. Without getting into spoilers, here's my take. Leist's cast of characters are interesting in and of themselves. They do leave you wanting to get to know them better; yet, as in real life you only get to see the sides and masks that others want you to see. That, to me, was the author's point. Everyone in Oasis seems to have an agenda, and it's hard to know what to believe. With that in mind, Leist does a great job of bringing to life the picturesque town of Oasis, and the menacing End House. The book is reminiscent of tales like "House on Haunted Hill," yet with its own twists on the supernatural thriller. The story is well-paced and the dangers faced by Leist's characters feels terrifyingly real. All in all, a good read. I look forward to reading more works from this author.

THE PERFECT FANTASY

THE PERFECT FANTASY

A pure taste of happiness.
Boats filled with flowers.
Sea gulls picking at the shore.
The perfect fantasy until...

Grey clouds roll in.
The sky turns dark.
Thunder rumbles in the distance.
Rain droplets ping on the boats.

The party is over.
My fantasy is over.
The fun is over.
Belongings are packed.

Winds dig into the sand.
Palm trees tremble in fear.
Birds flee en-mass.
Time to seek shelter.

The Dead are coming to Oasis.

THE DEAD GAME

ALONE IN THE DARK

ALONE IN THE DARK

"I sit alone by the table.
I hear voices around me.
Sounds of movement.
Sounds of life.

I reach out.
I can feel the smoothness.
A plate.
A meal.

Smells waft by my nose.
Aromas of chicken.
Sweet smells of  pudding.
Smells of life.

What color is the food?
Is the sun shining in?
Are the faces around me young or old?
So many questions.

Questions I can't answer.
I can never answer.
For I am blind,
Have been blind for years."

The anguish my mother had faced
For most of her life.
Her sight stolen from her
At a young age.
Loss of sight.
Loss of colors.
Loss of faces.
Loss of memories.

A WALK DOWN THE ROAD

A WALK DOWN THE ROAD

Let's take walk

Let’s take a walk down the road.
A road that is bordered on
both sides by flowers.
A cobblestone road
leading down to the water.
Beautiful houses encircle the
lush mountains around us.
Keep following the steps.
All your dreams will soon come true.

THE SHADOWS OF THE DEAD

THE SHADOWS OF THE DEAD

I am sitting by the Oasis Hotel
One warm and sunny day.
The palm trees are waving
In the soft sea breeze.
A shadow swoops down low,
right near my head.
I duck down,
With terror filling my heart.
Are The Dead now appearing
during the daylight hours?
I've only seen them in the dark
After they rise up from ocean.
Look!
It's coming out of the pool.
It's standing up.
It's becoming taller.
Taking on a new form.
It looks human.
What's happening to me?
What's happening to our poor town?
Am I hallucinating?
The Dead have taken over.

THE DEAD GAME

THE DEAD ARE HERE TO STAY

THE DEAD ARE HERE TO STAY

Look at the pretty sky.
Such beauty way up high.
Clouds drifting by so slowly
Like a shrine to what's holy.

All of this will soon come to an end.
Don't bother to search for a friend.
The moon will rise up in the night sky
Into the danger from what lurks high.

Dark shadows will descend onto the sand.
Shrieking louder than a marching band.
What do they want from our peaceful town?
Death and mayhem--all served with a frown.

Run for you life if you still can.
Danger for each and every man.
The Dead are here to stay.
They didn't come to play.

GO AWAY LYMPH-EDEMA!

GO AWAY LYMPH-EDEMA!

Why me?
I go swimming every week
So my legs won't feel tired or weak.
Don't know why my legs have to swell.
A disease created in hell.

Why me?
A bigger nuisance there can't be.
It makes life much harder for me.
Humidity is my enemy
As I cry out, "Stay away from me."

Why me?
I want to begin a day feeling well.
That's why I have this story to tell.
Life has these hurdles we must overcome.
Most of them aren't any kind of fun.

Why me?
This question has no answer for me.
It is just the way things have to be.
My father suffered from this in quiet.
I will follow his lead and not riot.

TAKE A SEAT

TAKE A SEAT

Take a seat under the tree,
Where you can feel proud and free.
Crafty and free as the mighty red fox,
Who refuses to live in a box.

Freedom should never be taken lightly.
It must be revered and taken sprightly.
The fox is anxious and waiting for your choice.
Do you want to live in a box with no voice?

Come sit beside the fox in the shade.
Flowers grow here and not one a spade.
The smell so sweet and fragrant.
All friends and not one vagrant.

Close your eyes and feel the breeze.
Your writing will come with ease.
The words will flow from your pen.
Stories for women and men.

Take a nap in the meadow.
Life can be sweet and mellow.
You'll wake up with a smile.
Eager to walk a mile.

Find your perfect spot to be.
Let your imagination free.
A place that makes you feel just right.
Your senses will know what to write.
