GOODBYE OLD FRIEND

Inky Waves
Source:vhspositive

GOODBYE OLD FRIEND
The world is changing.
Forests are dying.
Animals are becoming extinct.
Nature has taken control.
Days are warmer.
Rain falls harder.
Earthquakes rock the planet.
Hurricanes bring the winds.
Ocean waves dance to the deadly tune.
Bow to our new foe, Mother Nature.
Crime does its share,
But nature cleans the slate.
Towns and cities topple
Beneath the rubble.
The salt water hits my face
As I watch the waves rise.
I wait for the beautiful sight
To turn deadly and reckless.
The laps at the shore
Become heavy slaps.
Rocks and debris are
Thrown to the wind.
Soon I am drenched.
The ocean has come ashore
To wreck havoc on our lives.
My eyes tear as I search for
the ocean’s lost beauty.
I search for the camaraderie of
My old friend who’d soothed my fears.
My friend is long gone.
All is gone.
And so will we.

THE DEEP

THE DEEP
The water sparkles.
A bottomless pit.
Shadows of tree limbs
drift along its murky surface.
It snatches pieces of debris
on its journey down river.
Rocks, branches, leaves…
fall into its dark abyss.
Something is moving.
A hand.
Reaches for me.
An inky black hand.
What should I do?
Wait.
Two arms.
A dark figure
emerges from the water.
Too big to be human.
It’s facing me.
It doesn’t have eyes.
A dark shadow,
dripping inky slime.
It roars.
It walks toward me.
I want to run.
I want to hide.
But I can’t.
My feet are stuck to the ground.
More roaring sounds.
More creatures are rising.
Is this real?
Am I dreaming?
All becomes quiet.
No roaring.
What happened?
“What are you doing?”
I turn around.
I’m standing in front
of the TV screen.
My friends stare back at me.
I’m blocking a horror movie.
I feel embarrassed.
I feel myself being hit
by popcorn.
Another Saturday night.

DEBRIS

The waves cascade forth.
Carrying their baggage to shore.
Debris of life gone by.
Muted colors of the pink sky.
Seaweed tickles my toes.
Shells crunch beneath my heels.
A display of humanity.
Sprinkled through soft the sand.

CLEAR THE WAY

Source:

The waves roll in.
Not softly.
But with a bang.
A barrage of water.
To lift debris away.
To clear the way.
For The Dead.
THE DEAD GAME

RAINDROPS ON MY MIND

Raindrops on my mind.
A feeling of cleanliness.
How can we resist its pull?
It draws us to the window
to watch its majestic descent to earth.
It washes away all dirt and impurities.
The dirt left by humanity.
Wash me.
Make me fresh and new once again.
Who can ask for anything more?

AN ISLAND DRIFTING IN THE OCEAN

Each one of us is an island.
An island drifting in the ocean,
picking up debris along the way.
The debris of life and experiences.
Some of us become open islands,
welcoming and self-sufficient.
While others build walls around their plot of land,
becoming lost and finally deserted.
Which type of island are you becoming?
