A SOLEMN PROMISE

World Trade Center

The skyline is clear.
Buildings stand tall and bright.
Then a day arrives that
ruins every day to come.
Intruders invade our space
and destroy our twin towers.
Towers I love.
Towers where I had worked.
Goodbye, my precious towers.
Never again will our skyline be invaded.
It shall remain clear forever.
A solemn promise.

BEFORE

World Trade Center

The skyline was beautiful before.
Hope was present before.
Brotherhood was keenly felt before.
Life was pure and simple.
Death wasn’t an everyday concern.
Before.

NO SHELTER FROM THE STORM

The birds are watching.
They are waiting for night.
It will provide cover
for their flight over Oasis.
They will storm the Town Hall
with shrieks of glee.
Their bodies will transform into
creatures of hell.
There will be no shelter from this storm.

THE GRIM REAPER

Something is waiting for me.
Outside my front door.
I can sense its presence.
Can it be death?
Am I ready for it?
No one can be ready.
It comes for us when
we are the least prepared.
If I shut the door,
will it go away?
It’s moving closer to the house,
smacking repeatedly against the window.
Bang.
Bang.
I peek out.
A branch from the tree
is waving in the breeze.
This time I was lucky.
What about the next time?
I better be ready.

SEIZE THE MOMENT

Lightning hits the spot.
Thunder rumbles by.
Clouds flee in horror.
Sky turns black in fear.
End House is under attack.
Nature has its final say.

OUR GAMES HAVE JUST BEGUN --- THE DEAD GAME --- PART 31

Off to the gingerbread house we go
On this fine fall day.
The country road yawns before us,
Pointing the way with pebbled arms.

Shana is laughing up a storm,
Similar to the one building around us.
Swirling gusts lead us by the hand
To a cottage made not by man.

The house floats in a dewy gauze of its own,
Shielded from any attacks or storms.
It glistens and shimmers in the fading light
As we draw closer to its unfailing might.

The front door opens at our approach,
An extended arm our only invitation.
I want to leave but Shana says,
"Linda, let's see who lives inside."

Before I could answer she walks in,
Leaving me alone in the dying day.
Pebbles unearth themselves in my direction
Until I'm forced to seek shelter from the storm.

An older couple wait for us inside,
Wearing clothes from days long gone.
They show us around their unusual home,
Where rooms are shrines to their grown children.

We are led to the attic to find a lone rocking chair,
Facing the forest and deserted country road.
The woman explains they are The Watchers,
Watching over the town for errant vampires.

My ears are ringing and my heart is pounding
As I listen to her words in disbelief.
She says there's always a Watcher in the rocking chair
As the chair begins to rock on its own.

We flee the scene of our worst nightmare,
Determined never to return to this awful place.
We don't know whether to believe her story,
But the chair did begin to rock in its place.

Our games have just begun.

MAGICAL DOOR

A door exists in Oasis, Florida that will grant
access to anywhere you would like to escape to.
The fishing village has kept this door a secret
from the residents of Oasis.
Only the elders of Oasis are aware of this door,
since they were the ones who gave the door to them.
Whenever damaging storms or attacks by creatures
plague Oasis, the villagers use the door to escape.
To escape to a safer and quieter place.
Too bad the rest of the town aren’t aware of this escape.
One more secret in a town full of dark secrets.

WHERE IS IT SAFE?

Walking alone at night in Oasis
can be very dangerous for your health.
The path along the beach is dark and deserted.
The trees are flailing their arms in the growing wind.
Sand from the beach is hitting you in the face.
Dark shadows are following your desperate path
through the wind-torn streets of town.
Where is it safe?
The church is losing its roof and windows.
Flying creatures are hovering close
to the buildings.
Nowhere is safe in Oasis
from the night’s fury.
THE DEAD GAME has begun.

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 153

The young residents of Oasis were determined to fight the demons invading their town. Their plan was weak but they were ready for battle. Or so they thought.

“If we begin the fight on our own, then they’ll be finally forced to confront the demons,” David said. “It’s over for us one way or the other, so we might as well go down fighting.”
“Make sure to inform Todd and Sam. That’s the only way this plan will work,” Linda said to the priest.
“I’ll go right away,” said the Father, pulling on his coat.
Linda watched as the priest hurried out the door. He had accepted her story about Wolf and The Dead a little too easily—without asking even one question. She hoped that she was just being paranoid and that the priest didn’t have his own ulterior motive—like everyone else seemed to have in this town.
Turning to leave, she spotted someone standing inside the front door; eavesdropping on their whispered conversation. She peered closer and was shocked to recognize the priest’s housekeeper. Why would the housekeeper be interested in what they’d been discussing? And why was she hiding? Linda mentally added this person to her ever-growing list of suspects.
Meanwhile, Father John was hurrying across the street to the sheriff’s office. He rushed inside and blurted out loud, “Linda and her friends are going to Wolf’s house to confront him; you and Todd must meet them there before they get themselves into trouble.”
“How stupid could they be?” Sam was the only officer on duty: Carl was off somewhere on his own.“Thank you, Father. Todd and I will take care of this immediately.”
Father John turned away to leave the office. Before he completely turned his face away, Sam thought he saw a weird green light reflected in the Father’s usually calm blue eyes. He hoped that they didn’t have another enemy to contend with as he watched the priest walk very slowly
from his office and across the street. Detecting no further indication that the Father was anything but what he appeared to be, he calmed down a little—but he unfortunately knew that appearances could be very deceiving.
He called Todd to update him on the new development in town. Todd replied that he was heading right over to Wolf’s house before Linda and her friends got themselves killed—or even worse.

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 150

Shana had a new idea. She wanted her friends to fight Wolf on their own, without waiting for Todd or the sheriff.

At that moment, Shana, Linda, Mike, and David were sitting in the dark, secretly planning their own line of attack against Wolf. They had convened at Shana’s store, hoping that this location would make it more difficult for Todd and Sam to track them down.
They sat around Shana’s table in the back room with the lights off and the front door securely locked. A small candle on the table provided the only light in the room. Shadows on the walls swayed back and forth with the motion of the candle’s flame. Each time the shadows moved, Shana jumped a little inside, recalling the dark figures that had stalked her in town.
As she stared at the flickering shadows, she hoped and prayed that they would finally be able to rid their town of the menacing beings. Despite the fear racing through her icy veins, she said, “We must confront Wolf on our own! We must learn to protect ourselves without relying on others to deliver us from this evil!”
“Wolf is much too powerful for us to fight against by ourselves!” David said.
But Shana had formulated her own plan and was excited to offer it to the group. “We’ll go up against Wolf in his own house!”
“Have you gone crazy?” cried out Mike.
“No! Listen to me! We’ll make sure that Todd and Sam find out about this meeting before it happens: this way they can come to our aid.”
“Oh! How romantic!” said Linda, “Knights in shining armor, valiantly coming to our rescue.”

NO PLACE SAFE

The church used to be a place of safety
in Oasis, Florida.
Now it sits ruined and dark
from the attacks of the dark creatures,
descending upon the town.
No place is safe anymore in Oasis.
The vacation paradise has turned into
a dark haven of fear and death.
What do the residents attempt to do?
