SHADES OF GREY

Shades of Grey

An orange streak hits the spot
Where day and night meet a lot.
Flames float to the sky
From arms raised up high.
The light play continues through the night
As we watch and hold each other tight.
The sky lightens to shades of grey
As it welcomes the coming day.
Happy, we made it through the long, dark night.
The rising sun is a welcome sight.

BENEATH THE SURFACE

Hot flames.
Fires burning deep.
Beneath the surface.
Rumbling.
Splitting rocks.
Seeking an exit.
The earth is alive.
Ready to explode.
Did you have any doubts?
Were you a skeptic?
Seeing is believing.
Sizzle.
Pop.

SEEK SHELTER

The sky rumbles its pain.
The clouds shout out in vain.
The water bubbles hot.
It won’t forget you not.
Run from the hot flames of hail.
Try to hide to no avail.
Seek shelter from the storm.
This will be the new norm.
The Dead now run the town.

The water bubbles hot.
It won’t forget you not.
Run from the hot flames of hail.
Try to hide to no avail.
Seek shelter from the storm.
This will be the new norm.
The Dead now run the town.
Chin up and dare not frown.
We must bow to their favor.
While we wait for our Savior.

HELL IS REIGNING DOWN FROM ABOVE

HELL IS REIGNING DOWN FROM ABOVE
“Hail is raining down from the sky!
Hell is reigning down from above!”
Linda races through the pummeled streets,
Dodging pieces of roof tops.
“How could this be happening?
The sun was out moments ago.
I smell fire.
My skin is burning hot.”
Her feet slow to a stop.
Linda lifts her head to the black sky.
Flames are shooting from the church.
Red hot flames with swirls of yellow and orange.
Cries of horror float in the air around her.
Shrieks and moans are lifted in the rising winds.
She turns around in a circle,
Desperate to locate the source.
“It’s coming from the Town Hall!”
I knew it!
Everybody has to be there.
Please god let them be there.“
The cries rise in intensity
With each footstep.
The front doors are open.
Darkness beckons from within.
The sight inside knocks the breath from her lungs.
Flying creatures are circling her friends.
Creatures with furry bodies and human faces.
One swoops down and lifts her friend up to the ceiling.
“The Dead are here.
What should I do?
Wait! Father John is chanting.
Will he be able to save us?”

OUR GAMES HAVE JUST BEGUN --- THE DEAD GAME --- PART 20

What is reality?
And what is fantasy?
Should I run to the cold
Or go to the heat?
I shouldn't have left the party.

Wolf stands under a tree.
His gaze leaves frosty trail-marks
On Linda's shivering body.
The cold air holds her in its thrall.

"Come to me."
Wolf walks forward,
Bringing cold summer nights with him,
Promises of snow-swept sunrises.
He stands frozen in place.

Her shoes dig into the icy cold grass,
Taking her closer to her destiny.
She can't fight it any longer.
She has to give in to the night.

Wolf takes her into his arms.
"You are now mine,
My ice princess."
His lips crush hers in a bruising kiss.

Hot flames burst around her.
Freezing rain washes them away.
Hot and cold feelings overwhelm her.
Each fighting for domination.

Am I ready for this?
Ready for the cold and the night?
Wolf's black eyes lock into hers,
Assuring her,
Drawing her closer to him.

A snapped twig is followed by hot breath.
The ice melts off her.
Her heart pumps blood to her cold limbs.
She moves away from Wolf.

Todd's arms envelope her with their warmth.
They encircle her with feelings of love.
"This is right.
This is my destiny."
She smiles.

Wolf's eyes turn hard and unrelenting.
He backs away from her.
"This battle is not finished"
Are his last words
Before he disappears into the night.

THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS

What is my nightmare?
I’m in an office building,
somewhere in New York City.
I hear explosions.
I look out the window.
Planes are dropping bombs.
Buildings are bursting into flames.
People are screaming around me.
I run down the stairs,
caught in a mass of people.
All intent on escaping.
To where, we don’t know.
I run down the streets.
Bombs keep falling.
I see a bridge in the distance.
Then it’s gone.
It exploded.
All that’s left are flames.
What is happening?
Are we under attack?
I close my eyes.
I open them again.
I can see my room.
Thank god it was only a nightmare.
I swear I could still smell the smoke.
A strange holiday nightmare.

THE HAUNTED HOUSE

Who doesn’t love a dark and deserted house?
A house that holds no people but only memories.
Memories of lives that have passed through its walls.
Walk through its old fence to its overgrown yard.
Sounds are coming from inside.
Shadows are moving through the yard.
Maybe this house isn’t as deserted
as we assumed.
End House holds more than memories.
It may be holding spirits who should
have been long gone.

THE DEAD GAME -- DAY 55

The flames began to sputter, shooting bright sparks of orange and yellow puffs of fire at them. As the flames grew taller and fuller, harrowing sounds began to echo from inside the fireplace. In horror, they watched as body parts dropped down from the chimney. They sizzled and burned in the intense flames, splattering blood across the fireplace walls. Severed arms and legs—even sliced-off fingers and toes—flew down the chimney. Bloody limbs flew out from the fireplace, landing at their feet on the dark- green carpet.
Shana felt like she was losing her mind. She had to get out of this place. Blood and body parts were flying around the room and no one was doing anything. They were all standing there like idiots—frozen in place. And what was happening to the others in the basement? Were they experiencing similar horrors? Were these body parts from their friends?
“Look! There’s a new door next to the fireplace! Come on! Hurry! Let’s use it to get out of here!” Todd grabbed hold of their hands and pulled them out of the room.
“I didn’t see a door there a second ago! Did it just materialize, or am I going crazy? Is this a hallucination, or is this really happening to us?” Linda yelled.
