BUDS OF HOPE

In midst of despair and sorrow
Rise buds of hope for the morrow.
Still standing upright and strong
Against all that can go wrong.

These are extreme times of confusion and change,
Media expanding over a broader range.
We are attacked by sounds from each direction,
Leaving no time for thinking and reflection.

These flowers know what's real,
They go by what they feel.
Away from the hustle and bustle,
They grow wild without any tussle.

A day to clear my cluttered mind is all I need.
To recharge my battery is what I should heed.
I'll recharge in a quiet place like this.
A zest for life is what I dearly miss.

THE DEAD GAME HAS BEGUN

THE DEAD GAME
Louise and her friends escaped End House but the deadly game was far from over.
The Dead had much more in store for Louise.
Black shapes were creeping toward them on the pool deck.
Louise fled down the stairs to the beach,
with Mike and David following close behind.
David was screeching about flying bats trying to knock him off the mountain.
Hard objects swiped at her,
almost causing her to lose her balance on the slippery stone steps.
But she continued on, refusing to look back.
She dashed along the beach.
Mounds of sand were being thrust in her face.
On the walkway, branches swiped her across the face.
Skinny wooden arms struggling to hold her back.
She ran down Main Street.
She felt all alone.
The streets quiet.
No lights or sounds were coming from the empty buildings.
Candles were flickering inside the gazebo.
Her body was being thrust toward the ghostly display of lights.
The gusting wind was flinging leaves and branches,
but still she was being propelled forward.
She had no control over her body;
she was like a puppet on a string.
A noose wrapped itself around her neck.
She was hanging in the middle of the gazebo.
Hooded creatures began circling her.
The noose was tugged tighter
until she could no longer breathe—or even care to struggle any longer.
Without any air left in her lungs…
with the world spinning around her…
she watched as the shadows slowed down
to take on distinct human forms.
The figures revealed themselves to be men and women with black eyes,
glaring up at her.
They were chanting in an unfamiliar language.
Their hoods casting their faces in deep shadow.
Long metal chains hung from their necks with gold medallions depicting snarling wolves’ heads.
One member of the group lifted arms up high.
The winds turned wilder and more violent,
moaning in unison with the voice of the unknown leader.
Louise recognized one face right before she lost consciousness,
but she knew that it was too late for her or the town.
THE DEAD GAME has begun.

MIDNIGHT AT THE OASIS

MIDNIGHT AT THE OASIS

When the clock chimes 12:00
midnight in the glass house,
time will stand still.
The music will stop.
Dancers will freeze in place.
All will be quiet,
waiting for the last chime.
After the twelfth bong,
time will be released from its trance.
The dancing and music will resume.
No time is lost.
Nothing is gained.
The Dead have assumed control.
THE DEAD GAME has begun.

FOLLOW THE CANDLES

Follow the candles
to where they may lead you.
Down the dark corridor you walk.
Expecting a monster at every corner.
No one appears.
No sounds to break the dead quiet.
Down the corridor you go.
Waiting for something or someone.
But all you see is darkness
and more candles.
A door appears at the end.
It creaks open.
Do you really want to see what
is on the other side?
Human nature propels you forward.
Forward into the dark gloom.
What happens next?
The answer is hidden in the
inner recesses of your mind.
Follow your nightmare to its
bitter end.
Hurry before you wake up.
There’s no turning back now.

DARK SHADOWS OF MY MIND

The nightmare of my mind,
Crammed with trees and dirt.
A deserted forest of the night;
No visitors or intruders.

Graves mark the spots
Where life once stood.
Replaced by shadows,
Drifting in time and space.

A space pitch black,
Deep in the recesses of my mind.
No way to escape it
For it follows me everywhere.

THE DOOR THAT LEADS TO NOWHERE

I love doors.
You don’t know what’s behind them,
unless you open the door.
On the other side, there could be
something magical.
Or something earth shattering
and deadly.
In The Dead Game, the magical door
opens to any place that you imagine.
But there is also a second door in
Oasis, Florida.
This door opens to your worst nightmare.
Where is the door now?
It was in End House but the house was destroyed.
Was the door also destroyed?
Read The Dead Game and find out.

CLOSER TO THE BLUE

I sink deeper with each footstep,
Bringing me closer to the blue.
The blue green water sways
Beneath a blue sky so true.

A fantasy worth remembering.
A dream worth keeping.
Take me back to the shore,
I long for so much more.

My world is so bleak.
I can't get to sleep.
I gaze at the soulless streets
And never fall asleep.

If I close my eyes tight,
I might see my paradise this night.
It will take me back to times
When everything was so fine.

THE DEAD GAME --- BENEATH END HOUSE

THE DEAD GAME — DAY 63

Horrified by the deformed creatures, Linda slipped and lost her hold on the slimy rocks. She began to free fall through space…down into the nether reaches of End House. Flashing through her mind were disturbing images of the creatures living beneath the house. Were they somehow related to the creatures that drifted through town? Would she become one of them once she reached the bottom of the tunnel? Was there even a bottom to the tunnel? Would she continue falling forever? How…
Todd’s booming voice interrupted her wild jumble of thoughts. Into the deep unyielding silence, Todd had yelled out, “Stop!” The tunnel obeyed his order and transformed itself back into stairs with the evil creatures retreating to wherever they’d come from.
They were standing once again on top of the sweeping staircase. This time they made it all the way down.

DARE TO DREAM

I want to look at the night,
Gaze out into the unknown.
Dare to dream of flight,
A dream of conquering it all.

When night comes softly
On feet as light as air,
I can see more clearly
Of what I can dare.

Alone on this hilltop
With the embracing cold,
I will leap past boundaries
That I have created of my own.

Darkness hides all secrets
Beneath its cloak of despair.
Secrets that lie safe and secure
Until the morning light.

At night I can roam free
Without the hindrance of others.
I can leap over castle walls,
Sail forth on gossamer wings.

Looking down at all below me,
Sleeping in their beds of down,
I can see how I am different
And can never fit into the mold.

The Last Game Has Begun --- THE DEAD GAME

Red sky at night,
Sailor's delight.
Red sky at Oasis,
An omen of things to come.

Tides rise in desperation.
Sun sets before its time.
Birds flee the scene.
Time comes to a stop.

Brights light criss cross the sky,
Angry rumbling joins in.
Clouds shed their tears,
While the moon hides behind its stars.

Sharp raindrops hit me,
Glass bullets to the face.
Waves rise in panic,
While palm trees flinch in despair.

Wolf and his army rise from the sand.
The Watchers approach from town.
Both sides armed and dangerous.
One side has the advantage.

The Watchers are sanctioned to serve.
Selected by the world's vampires.
Serve and protect the human race.
They will fulfill their mission.

I'm surrounded.
Wolf's men are taking me.
Todd has a gun.
He is running after us.

"Todd! Please save me!"
Wolf takes me in his arms.
Todd is left standing in the sand.
Human vampires can't fly.
Only damn vampires like Wolf can.

A fortress on an island
That I've never seen before.
There's a moat and drawbridge.
Armed guards at the front gate.

Wolf carries me inside.
Suits of armor stand at attention.
I've been transported back in time.
A caldron simmers in the hearth.

"My princess,
Welcome to my castle.
I'm sure you'll be comfortable.
Better amenities than the 17th century."

"Am I a prisoner?" I ask.
"Yes, for now." He whispers.
"Until the battle is won,
You will be safe here."
Wolf touches my hair almost reverently.

"I don't want to stay here!
I want to go back to my people.
You're my enemy and always will be.
Let me go!"
I pull away from him with contempt.

"The battle is set.
The lines are drawn.
There's no going back,
Only forward."
Wolf almost looks sad.

"Nothing is set in stone.
Let me leave."
I am pleading with him now,
Pleading with a creature with no heart.

"I'm so sorry.
I'll come back for you.
Goodbye, my ice princess."
After one last look of longing,
Wolf is gone.

I'm left alone.
Except for the women in long dresses,
Who are staring at me.
Maybe they want to feed me
Or kill me.

I sit down to wait.

THE DEAD GAME --- THE LAST GAME TO BE PLAYED

A party not to be missed.
A masquerade ball for the elite.
A secret party for the rich and famous.
A time to make or break alliances.

A tall woman stares at me.
Her face hidden by a long beak.
Her hair a luscious red.
Could be real or not.

All of this could be an illusion.
Set to confuse my mind.
I won't be side-tracked by all the beauty.
I'm here to locate the elusive host.

The first party took two of our own.
I won't allow it a second time.
I will trust no one.
Not even that beautiful woman.

Where is Linda?
She's supposed to be at my side.
She has joined the other residents.
Shana is standing by her side.
I will leave them be.

"Hello Todd,"
A voice murmurs in my ear.
I recognize the deep voice.
"Hello Hayden. What do you want?"
I have no time for him or Wolf.

"Wolf would like to speak with you."
Hayden gives a hint of a smile.
"Talk with me or kill me?
I might find time later."
I quickly walk away.

The music rocks and rumbles
In tune with the throbbing bodies.
All intent on keeping up to the beat,
Keeping abreast of each other.
A creature who loses sight of what's important
Becomes fodder for the history books.

Hard partying and playing brings results.
New acquaintances, new alliances.
The lifeblood of the paranormal.
Keep silent, listen, and absorb.
And never fall behind.

I must speak with Wolf.
I can't delay the inevitable.
I must know what he is planning.
I must be prepared.
I like playing the game like all the others.
I just play it better.

Linda is gone again.
She is in the garden with the two demons.
She mustn't be alone with Wolf and Hayden,
For they have turned many a pretty head.
I can't see them anymore.

There they are behind the rose bushes,
Behind the fountain of a mermaid shedding tears.
The garden is too quiet.
Linda is backing away in fear.
Time to intervene and put an end to the charade.

Wolf is downed by my blow.

Linda is staring at me in horror.
It must be my eyes.
They must have turned yellow during the attack.
I can't let her think I'm a creature like the rest of them.

"Linda, don't be afraid of me.
It's still me."
I walk to her.
She moves away.
I won't rush her.

Too many things to explain to her.
Too many choices for her to make.
She needs time.
And she needs to trust me.
Time will tell all.

Now I must deal with Wolf and Hayden
To the death if I must.
They need to be destroyed.
The last battle to the death.

The Last Game To Be Played.
