Showdown at Old Town?

Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2021

The Dead at Heart by Susanne Leist is the third installment of this cleverly crafted supernatural series. Fans of the author are acquainted with her parallel universes in which mortals and nocturnal creatures live side by side in a fragile existence. In this episode, the vampire stronghold of Oasis finds itself under attack by mysterious forces. Sheriff Sam sets out in pursuit of the werewolf team that kidnapped the lady of the estate. He asks Shana for assistance as her beloved William is suspected of complicity. She accompanies him on a hair-raising chase from the swamps of Florida to the historic city of Quebec. Shana’s loyalty to William is compromised yet she has no choice to continue the pursuit with Linda’s safety at risk.

The plot thickens as the Watchers, represented by Samantha and the Archangels, intercede with the intent of ending a potential conspiracy among a contingency of rogue vampires. Shana realizes that William may be condemned by the Watchers, yet dares not hamper the search as Linda’s fiance Gregg has joined forces with Sheriff Sam. They soon learn that an autoimmune virus has infected the outlaws and caused their insurgency. Proclaimed as the Dead by their fellow vampires, Shana fears the worst. Can she help rescue Linda from the damned and save William in the process?

This is a Gothic suspense/thriller that remains true to the vampire mythology while exploring fresh storylines and plot twists guaranteed to keep readers enthralled throughout. For vampire genre enthusiasts and romantic horror fans alike, The Dead at Heart by Susanne Leist is one you won’t want to miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightfully Creepy Gothic Mystery, 30 Mar. 2017

This review is from: The Dead Game (Paperback)
I read this in one sitting, because I couldn’t stop turning pages. The story is well done to say the least. Leist weaves together a gothic horror story that includes both good and evil vampires. Unlike many stories that include vampires, The Dead Game focuses on our human heroines and their efforts to solve the mysteries of Oasis Florida.
Keeping to the format for good gothic horror, Leist introduces a tantalizing romantic element. The haunted house had a personality all its own. Be certain to read the prologue to catch the house’s seductive side.
If you like good gothic horror this ranks right up there with Anne Rice and Radcliff.
This review has renewed my determination to complete book 2 of The Dead Game. It’s amazing that just when you’re about to give up, something like this comes along to reaffirm your faith in yourself.
Thank you, Flowergirl, whoever you are.

As one reviewer saidThe Dead Game by Susanne Leist is a mysterious supernatural thriller with plenty of twists and turns that is well-written and keeps you turning the page. From the first page you start a wild ride and just when you think all is well, she throws in another twist.
The Story
Can you feel your heart beating? Is it beating too fast? Do you feel trapped?
This is because you are. You’re standing in a pool of water, in the basement of End House, wearing your party clothes. But there is no party, no host and no guests.
The door behind you locks shut. The only way is forward, through the falling cages with their sharp edges, ready to ensnare their next victim.
Circular saws begin to descend, looking for heads to slice off.
Meanwhile, Linda is upstairs with the rest of her friends being pursued by creatures through revolving rooms. Or are they illusions? What should she do?
Run!
The owner of End House takes no prisoners.
The Dead Game has begun.

Linda was passing the empty tables by the tall windows when she felt her arm being tugged—very hard. Before she could react, she found herself being forcibly dragged through the open patio doors and onto the isolated garden path. She came face to face with the mighty Wolf and his trusted companion, Hayden. The grounds were deserted. Everyone had left the gardens and she was all alone with the two wicked vampires.
Wolf glared at Hayden. “Please let go of her arm; we are not animals. We never force ourselves on women.”
“Chivalry among demons—I’m very impressed. Too bad your table manners and choice of dishes leave a lot to be desired,” Linda said. Her hatred of Wolf had just caused her to forget her low position in the food chain; she closed her mouth to stop herself from talking. In the future, she must remember that he was a vampire—the strongest one in the world—and that he could easily destroy her at any time.
Wolf didn’t seem the least bit focused on her. “I didn’t come here to play parlor games with you. I need you to convince Todd to join with us. He can never be human or will ever be accepted by them. He belongs with us. He must stick with his own kind.”
“He’s not like you in any way at all: he cares too deeply for people and is loyal to his friends. On the other hand, you and your kind enjoy killing too much and have no feelings whatsoever.”
“Todd will never be accepted by humans or by his own kind. He will be an outcast with nowhere to go. He must join with us.”
“Todd is human and will always be accepted by humans.”
“Let’s kill her now, boss. She’s going to be trouble. I could take her away and no one will ever see her again,” Hayden said, grabbing hold of her arm again.
Oops, she did it again. Her big mouth had now sealed her fate. She had to learn how to be more assertive without getting herself into trouble.
Wolf strolled over to her with a wicked gleam surfacing in his eyes.
“I have a much better use for her in the future. When she finally comes to her senses, she’ll realize that she will be better off with a real vampire with limitless powers than with a pathetic human. She’ll learn about intoxicating love and passion—not the games that humans play that pale in comparison.
Here comes the human. Let her go for now.”
Linda was horrified to find herself wrapped in Wolf’s strong, muscular arms. She became hypnotized by his black eyes and tempted by his deep voice. He seemed perfect in every way. She only wanted to be with him.
“I’ll be back for you.” Wolf held her tight against his body and whispered in her ear. “I love the way you stand up to me with your flashing blue eyes. Soon you’ll be mine, my beautiful ice queen.”
Linda couldn’t move her body. She was stuck in some kind of trance…she couldn’t leave; didn’t want to leave if given the choice. His voice soothed her and made her think of love, passion, and great need: a need that could be satisfied only by him with his expert hands and mouth. She knew that one day she was going to be with him, to be joined with him.
He lowered his mouth onto hers and drew her into a swirling haze of unexpected feelings and desires. His mouth fully covering hers introduced her to a new realm of pure pleasure. His powerful form enveloped her, making her feel feelings that were foreign and untried for her. She couldn’t get enough of him. She tentatively began touching his face and then his body with an eager and unrelenting hunger. She didn’t know what she needed, but she knew that she wanted and desired this beautiful man standing right before her. Her past life was washed out of her mind, never to be considered again. She begged him to take her with him tonight. In response, Wolf lifted her in his arms, as if she weighed nothing, and turned to leave the party. His beautiful face looked victorious and happy. His black eyes filled with passion. She hoped that it was because of her. He looked down into her small face and gave a hearty roar.
While Wolf carried her in his powerful arms, a dark shadow swooped out of the house and flew directly at them. Linda was knocked out of his arms, and Wolf was thrown across the patio.
She looked up to see who had attacked them. It was Todd, his eyes a deadly shade of green, standing there panting.
Linda backed away in horror. Todd’s eyes cleared and returned to their original dark color. Then he looked at her. “Don’t ever be afraid of me. I’m here to protect you.”
Then he was struck down by Wolf.
They began circling each other like two wild animals. Todd thrust his body at Wolf, causing Wolf to lose his balance, and they crashed together to the ground. Wolf pushed Todd aside and stood back up. He lunged at Todd, who sidestepped his maneuver. Todd retaliated by lifting him high up in the air and flinging him through one of the glass doors to the house. Wolf rose up and dusted glass off his clothing.
He said to Todd, who stood before him, “We are not anywhere near finished, my dear friend. The next battle between us will be more private—without so many witnesses. If I were you, I would watch your back…and your pretty little girlfriend.” Wolf stalked away with Hayden following close behind. Todd quickly followed.
Linda was left standing alone outside. She felt bereft without the touch of Wolf’s lips on hers and the solid strength of his arms holding her. She had felt the unmistakable pull by him on all her senses. In his arms, she’d felt weak and needy—as if she needed him to live. Todd and Wolf were extremely powerful and both had taken hold of her senses.

A beachfront town, a haunted mansion, people disappearing or turning up dead–these are the elements of gothic horror, but this unique novel has a more than a few twists. The writing is first-rate,  and the pace is fast. The characters are well-defined, and the plot is imaginative and unpredictable. Linda, Shana, Logan, Todd and others are plagued by the town’s original residents, old family secrets, and more. All kinds of paranormal manifestations  beset the characters. Poe and H.P. Lovecraft would have been proud to have written this novel. From an opulent mansion to a paranormal haunted horror, End House takes the town of Oasis down a frightening path. The mysterious black paper invitations to a party at End House advertising ‘Mysteries to solve’ and ‘Games to Play’ took both the characters and this reader’s imagination on a fascinating journey (review by Howard Lipman, pen name PanOrpheus, author of the ‘Delphic Oracle’ and ‘Tesla’s Tower’ books)

Review of "The Blood of the Black Rose by Stephanie Collier

Welcome to Stephanie Collier, the gifted author of the Gothic Romance, The Blood of the Black Rose.

Stephanie Collier has always immersed herself in other worlds created by talented minds, and her love of beautifully crafted words made her branch out at a young age, dreaming up new characters and worlds of her own. Stephanie currently resides in Missouri with her loving, supportive husband and amazingly talented four children.
Stephanie is an author of Gothic Romance stories with endings that tend to be bittersweet. Her debut novel, The Blood of the Black Rose, released in February, 2014.

How did you come up with the title for The Blood of the Black Rose?

-My mother and I used to walk every park in the area every morning and we were tossing around different ideas for my novel (I wanted to make sure that this book just wasn’t another vampire story). All of the sudden, I had this brilliant thought. (If you haven’t read the novel yet, this is a little bit of a spoiler.) My thought, which I shared with my mother instantly, was about the virgin white rose and how its scent is that of a virgin’s blood, thereby luring the vampire to it. I threw around many ideas that day, but the one that I absolutely fell in love with was that if a vampire touched it, the rose would begin to open and turn red as it sucked the blood of the vampire’s victims from them. If the vampire stayed connected to the rose, it would begin to suck out the vampire’s very essence and turn black as it opened further until their soul was trapped within the now black rose. Essentially, every black rose is a “dead” vampire. I loved the concept so much that I wanted that to reflect in my title.

Who is your favorite character and why?

-Honestly, it’s Alhena. I know that it should be Demyan, considering I wrote Part One in first person POV from his perspective, but it is Alhena. The reason being is because in the second half, after being born to him over and over through the loops of time, she shows such strength even though her soul is connected to him through the Gypsy curse. This time she doesn’t just blindly follow her heart; she questions her feelings, she questions him, she questions the curse. And the utmost reason why is because of the ending, but I don’t want to ruin that for anyone!

Tell us a little bit about your cover art. Who designed it? What made you fall in love with this particular design?

-The main image is a stock image that I bought the rights to and from there, I designed the rest myself. I took away some things in the image that I particularly didn’t love and added things that I did. I have always loved creating things in Photoshop and I knew that I wanted to design my own cover before I even finished the novel. There was a certain impression I wanted to convey and what I came up with did exactly that. I had quite a few that I designed, and ended up bouncing between two. One was a very lovely image of a man with snow falling around him and his hair was frozen, he was holding a rose and looking down at it. I thought that it represented Demyan wonderfully. However, I was worried that it would be misconstrued as a young adult book, so ultimately I decided against it.

Who is your intended audience?

-17 and up. I think more women will gravitate towards it than men, but I have been pleasantly surprised with the response from the male gender - other than that, anyone who loves dark gothic stories that have sexual content. And of course, anyone who wants more vampires!

What can we expect from you in the future?

-Oh my goodness! Lots of stuff!!! I am working on the 2nd book in The Immortal Darkness Chronicles which is dedicated to Erzsébet’s life up until The Blood of the Black Rose. Every book within the series will also be a stand-alone, so it will not be necessary to read every book in order to follow each characters story.
I am also almost finished with the first book in what is meant to be a trilogy for a YA Fantasy. I think that I will probably finish it up and then put it on the backburner for a while yet. I started writing that in my early 20’s, so I want to make sure that it flows. My writing has evolved so much over the years that I am worried the first three-fourths will not match the last part.
I have a NA WIP about an overweight young woman who turns to drugs in order to lose her weight. As the story unfolds, she realizes that not only is she losing her weight, but other things about herself that she once loved, and that her self-esteem issues have completely consumed her. It has a little bit of romance, but ultimately it is a story about self- discovery, awareness, finding happiness within yourself no matter your outer shell and making peace with yourself. It does keep true to the darker themes that I seem to gravitate to and isn’t as cut and dry as it sounds. I wish I could reveal more, but it’s still a little too early.
There is one other that I am devoting my time to, but it’s too early to see if I am going to stick with it or not, so I’d rather not disclose anything about that one at this time.

What can readers who enjoy your book do to help make it successful?

-Spread the word! Please, please, please! And if you enjoyed it, please take the time to leave a review, they really help us out!

Is there anything else you would like to say?

-Thank you very very much for having me on your blog, Susanne, I really appreciate it. I would also like to add that The Blood of the Black Rose is on sale on Amazon for $0.99 as a limited time offer and that beginning Sunday, March 23rd there is a contest for an autographed print copy on the Express Reviews website, link to follow. http://xpressreviews.weebly.com/giveaways.html

Before you go, can we get an excerpt from your debut novel?

1 Screaming Echoes
Spring 1943

Bombs burst through the air, gray smoke cutting across the purple-orange sky, raining shards of ruin and debris all around us.  I dragged my mother along by her elbow, ducking and scrambling along the broken uneven streets, her eyes wide in fear and loss.  My baby sister clung to her skirt, scurrying beside her as she dragged a tattered doll behind by its threadbare arm.  Her tear-stained face made rivulets of red puffy flesh peek through the dirt and dust that caked us.  She pressed her chubby cheek into my mother’s thigh and I could swear I heard her whimpers and sobs above the eruptions and screams of those massed around us.
A building on our left exploded into flame, the blast sprawling us to the ground.  A shower of brick and plaster poured over us, threatening to bury us where we had fallen.  My ears rang loudly, a thunder of following missiles whistling past, erupting with fury as they hit their targets.  For a moment I dare not move, terror forming a hard knot in my chest demanding tears of outrage, hatred and most of all unbridled dread.  I swallowed the bubbling emotions that would render me incomprehensible and slowly rose to my feet, the still air humming around me as if a storm were coming.  I could feel the electricity crackling as goose bumps lined my flesh, every hair on my body trying to stand on end.  Frantically my eyes scanned the rubble, searching for my mother and sister.  They were smaller than I and the blast had pried my aching fingers from my mother’s arm instantly.
The dust billowed around me, spiraling into small swirling formations before settling around my feet.  My eyes locked on an outstretched arm, the aftermath casting a sickening yellowish tint upon the pallid skin.  My stomach convulsed as I crouched down.  Small fragile fingers were tightly wrapped around a piece of torn brown wool in an upturned palm, gripping firmly to a doll’s arm.  “Please,” I mumbled, “God, please.”
Time seemed to slow as I moved pieces of wall and glass, brick, rock, plaster and pipe from her helpless unmoving body.  Screams, cries, shouts and explosions whirled around me yet sounded distant; my ears were filled with the loud quick beat of my heart.  It could not be my little Allandré, please Lord, please.  I removed the last piece of plaster covering her face, her unblinking emerald eyes staring into the gray-lined sky.  Blood trickled from the corner of her mouth, her gaze already filmed over with death.
My mournful howl of tragedy filled the silence that surrounded me as I sank to my knees amongst the destruction.  I cradled her small form to my chest barely noticing the glass slicing into my skin, embedding itself into my knees.  My heart screamed in torment, the pain wanting to rip me into shreds.  The only good thing in my life - so precious, so innocent and so beautiful was taken from me.  My little Allandré.

THE DEAD GAME--READ A PAGE EACH DAY--DAY 2

Each day, I'm going to post a page from my book. They will be consecutive. This way everyone has a chance to read my book online for free, since I wrote my book for everyone to enjoy.
Think of my book as a cross between the TV shows, The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. It also contains murder and mystery, similar to Elementary.
If you enjoy supernatural, mystery, and murder, then you should enjoy my book.
If anyone has comments on how to make my book even better, then please post away. Nothing is perfect and there's always room for improvement. I wrote for you, the readers, so let me hear your thoughts.
ENJOY READING!

That evening the house had been quiet.
Diane had been in the kitchen at the back of the house with her husband, washing and drying dishes after a late dinner. Without warning, all hell broke loose around them. A cold wind had blown into the house, lifting the hanging pots and pans and throwing them through the kitchen window. The doors of their new cabinets had been ripped off their hinges and crushed to pieces against the kitchen’s walls.
To Diane, it felt like a tornado had entered their house and was destroying it from within. They’d watched as their white shutters flew off the windows to shatter to pieces across the back patio.
Then the house had turned quiet—too quiet. Afraid that this meant something very bad for them, she’d prayed that she wasn’t right, but unfortunately, she had been. As cries filled the house, her heart had jolted in fear. The sounds were coming from the rooms above, from where her children were sleeping. Tim was tucked into his crib and Serena was sound asleep in her bed in the adjacent bedroom. They were innocent and alone upstairs with whatever or whoever was after them.
They were racing down the staircase, carrying their children, eager to reach the front door. Diane stopped dead in her tracks. A dark red substance was oozing into the house from under the door, creeping across the floor, devouring everything in its wake. They watched as the huge circular rug and the large hall table disappeared into its thick slime. Extending its reach farther out, it made its way toward them.
Diane detected a high-pitched keening cry coming from within the slime. She backed herself into a corner. “It’s going to swallow us!”
“Run out the back!” John shouted above the children’s frightened sobbing. He pushed her ahead of him. “Don’t think! Just make sure you get out of this house and down the stairs to the beach. Or else you might be living here forever!”
They climbed through the destroyed kitchen, through detached pieces of ceiling, through broken pieces of cabinets and sharp shards from shattered dishes.
Once outside, they were struck by flying debris. The patio was engulfed in a strong wind, which lifted the furniture high into the air. The white wicker pieces crashed against each other, the broken pieces falling into the empty pool.
The pool had been filled already twice that season. The house had a mind of its own: it wanted the pool empty of water and her family gone; and it was making sure that it remained that way.
The red liquid was creeping out beneath the kitchen door, inching its way toward them. She screamed above the sound of the howling wind. “It’s getting closer! It’s followed us outside! WE ARE ALL DEAD!”
“We must escape now! Don’t look back! Just run!”
She gazed down the steep staircase to the rocky shore below, to the jagged rocks that were being beaten by the raging waves of the ocean. In her heart, she knew that their fate was not going to be much better.
The sky rumbled, turning a deep black color, filled with dark pulsing clouds. Fluorescent streaks of lightning flashed across the darkening sky, followed by loud claps of thunder. The house shook all the way down to its foundation. Windows exploded; pieces of roof lifted off in the wind; bricks crumbled to the ground.
The red liquid continued in its arduous path across the patio: flowing over fallen debris, never slowing its pace, following close on the heels of the fleeing family. The slime lifted itself up and wrapped its bloody red tentacles around the horror-stricken family members. Trapped in its tight grasp, they watched in silence as the thrashing wind destroyed everything around them. Unable to move, they waited for the house to decide upon their final destiny.
A whirling mass of air rose from deep within the pool, drawing everything toward it like a giant magnet. Patio furniture, bushes, trees…and even the small family were pulled into the swirling vortex.
Everything was dragged down deep into the bowels of the house, where there was nothing—only absolute and complete darkness.
Once the intruders were taken care of, the house quieted down and the liquid retreated. The house returned to its sullen and gloomy appearance. No sounds or voices were heard again.
End House remained empty until the party five years later that awoke the house to the possibility of new victims.
