Book Review-My Last Year-Susanne Leist

THURSDAY, AUGUST 10, 2023

Anyone who has or has had a beloved pet will be able to relate to this story of a dog’s last year. It was written by his Mom but spoken in his words. Animals seem to know when their time on this earth is coming to an end. They cling to their beloved Mom and Dad. You can see worry in their eyes–what will happen once I’m gone? They really try to keep up and do all that they used to do when younger–but can’t anymore. It is heartbreaking for both the pet and the owner.

I found myself with tears in my eyes-both for Nounous and his Mom–and remembering all my babies who have gone over the Rainbow bridge.

About the Book: (from Amazon)

Nounous is a fourteen-year-old Maltese dog who loves people but loves his mother most. As he takes his last steps, he reminisces on life and worries about leaving his Mommy alone.

His mother, Susanne Leist, is a paranormal suspense author and former financial analyst. When she isn’t writing her books, Susanne spends precious time with Nounous, her best friend and muse.

About the Author: (from Amazon)

Hi, I am an author of paranormal suspense. In my first series, The Dead Game Series, the dead walk the night & into the day, leading our heroines on a dangerous adventure from Florida to Quebec.

The Blue Harbor Series offers a new set of heroines who fight to save their town from an Indian curse. The first book, Meet Me In Maine, uncovers the perpetrator of the curse and the plight of the Penobscot culture at the hands of the white man.

Meet Me In Maine’s new edition contains two bonus chapters with Scarlett’s and Elizabeth’s stories, revealing why they chose to settle in Blue Harbor. I also have a special treat for you, My Last Year, written by my Maltese Nounous.

Please sit back, put up your feet, and let me bring mystery and romance to your lives.

PREY FOR THE DEAD

The sand is soft beneath my feet.

I’m sure I’ve found a pleasant treat.

A metal door swipes across the sky,

removing the sun from the blue sky.

Trapped in a replica of my town,

I watch the sand become dark brown.

My longed-for peace won’t be won

since I’ve trusted the wrong one.

FINGERS FROM HEAVEN

Fingers from heaven

Reach for the shore.

Crooked shafts of light

Electrify the dark sky.

The clouds circle closer.

The rain falls harder.

The howling winds follow.

The waves rise up in fright.

The end is in sight.

A GARDEN FOR THE DEAD

crying statue

Frozen in place.

Dripping tears for centuries.

Memories of a lifetime.

Praying for salvation.

A frown for eternity.

Will her tears sprout

a garden for The Dead?

SNOWBOUND

Snowbound at the inn,

no one can get in,

besides the cursed one

who has already won,

by picking off bodies,

one by one.

FROZEN WITH PAIN

A town where the snow is black,

bringing coldness & fear.

Old remnants of tears held back

& times too hard to bear.

Woven from black sheets of rain,

fear covers in disarray.

Anguished & frozen with pain,

dark petals fall in dismay.

A RED GLOW

red glow

Alexander Calder, Sumac V. 1953.

A glow in the night

will lead me astray

from the moon’s light

to where I can’t say.

Bloody prints mark the way

to a small town on the shore.

At the end of the day,

we are at the devil’s door.

Time has no meaning or reason.

You can travel forward or back.

Death will follow with each season.

It is past time for me to pack.

NOTHING TO FEAR

1 Nothing to fear

You tell me there’s nothing to fear

since The Dead will soon be here.

Waves cascade to the shore.

I don’t believe The Dead’s lore.

Nothing can ruin this paradise.

Yet, cold fear runs through me like ice.

Now, the winds quicken their speed,

but I still refuse to heed.

I give a last glance at the trees,

and they are falling to their knees.

THE TREE

Beneath the tree

The tree appears dark and looming.

It could use some proper grooming.

I want to take a walk between its legs,

growing tall from the ground like giant pegs.

By its rules, we must strictly abide.

Imagine the secrets it must hide.

Come walk with me in its dark shade.

Through the fallen leaves, we will wade.

A canopy of leaves above our heads

As we fall asleep in our leafy beds.

WHERE THE WIND BLOWS

WHERE THE WIND BLOWS The trees of the forest shiver and shake, their long limbs trembling for the next quake. Their bodies blaze a glaring white with tears frozen from their new plight. The world has become hard and cold. My trembling body feels...

The trees of the forest shiver and shake,

their long limbs trembling from the last quake.

Their bodies blaze a glaring white

with tears frozen from their new plight.

The world has become hard and cold.

My trembling body feels old.

Surrounded on four sides by white,

the bright glare blinded my sight.

White is the color of my nightgown

as I stand and shiver with a frown.

A shadow emerges from the trees.

I hope it is not him, pretty please.

My body moves forward against my will.

I grab a thick tree and try to hold still.

I dig my feet into the packed snow,

but I must go where the wind might blow.

SING ME A SONG

Source:randomthoughtsforabeautifulgirl

Sing me a love song.

Rhyme me a sad tale.

The woe of heartbroken lovers

whose tinny cries take to the air.

The needle rides the grooves.

Round in a circle, it goes.

No beginning or end.

Like a tear that refuses to fall.

A song without an end.

The melody echoes through eternity.

One jump and scratch at a time.
