WE OPEN AT SUNSET

1 we open at sunset
“we open at sunset.”

The sun lowers its head in the darkening sky.
A young man pedals his bicycle.
He parks beneath the striped awning,
rushing to his wilting plants.
He brings them into the store.
I cross the street and peek into the window.
The man tends to the leaves with a mister.
He arranges them on a table beneath the window.
The plants straighten their stems.
Their leaves spread wide to hold each other’s hands.
The man steps back with a grin on his face.
Our eyes meet through the glass.
He holds my gaze before turning away.
He’s seen me.
The handsome man moves closer to the door.
His eyes seek mine.
I hold my breath.
A slow smile crosses his face,
dimpling his cheeks beneath sculpted cheekbones.
He waves for me to enter.
I open the glass door as the bell chimes.
The fragrant scent of flowers rises to my nose.
I stand beside the tall man.
Together, we watch the plants as they stretch their stems
toward the rays streaming through the window.
I whisper, “Why do you wait a whole day to water them?”
He faces me.
“This is the way,” he says.
I scrunch my nose. “What way?”
He smiles.
His dimples reappear.
“The way of the prior owner
who told me to water them at sunset.”
“What would happen if you forgot?” I ask.
He stares through the window.
“These are special plants that must be watered,”
he replies,
“the same time every day or else they die.”
“Amazing,” I murmur.
The plants glisten in the orange glow
from the sun before it retreats to bed.
The plants drop their hands.
“What happens now?” I ask.
He smiles.
“They go to sleep.”
“Sweet.”
His dark blue gaze falls on me.
“Would you like to accompany me to dinner this evening?”
My heart pounds.
“Will you tell me about the plants?” I ask.
His dimples deepen.
“Of course. And we can even share our names.”
I giggle.
“That’s right. I don’t know yours.”
“But I know yours, Amy.”
“How?”
He takes my hand,
placing it in the crook of his arm.
“All will be explained.”

WE OPEN AT SUNSET

1 we open at sunset
“we open at sunset.”

Why open at sunset?
Why wait until your flowers are dried out
from being in the sun all day?
Is the store an after work hobby?
In my mind’s eye, I can see the owner.
The sun is low in the deepening blue sky.
The young man pedals quickly on his bicycle
and parks below the red and white striped awning.
The dark-haired man rushes to his plants
who lie before him wilting.
He grabs them and brings them inside.
I cross the street and peek into the window.
The man tends to the leaves with a fine mister,
then soaks their dirt with a yellow watering can.
He lines them up on the table beneath the window,
rearranging them by size from smallest to tallest.
Before my shocked eyes, the plants stand straighter.
The leaves spread out to hold each other’s hands.
The man steps back with a happy expression on his face.
Our eyes meet through the glass.
He holds my gaze before turning away.
He’s seen me.
His eyes seek mine.
I hold my breath.
A slow smile wings across his face,
dimpling his plump cheeks.
His hand waves for me to enter.
I pull open the glass door as the bell chimes.
The fragrant scent of flowers wafts to my nose
from the shelves of plants around the small room.
I stand beside the tall and handsome man.
Together we watch the plants as they stretch their stems
to the sun streaming through the window.
I whisper, “Why did you wait a whole day to water them?”
He faces me. “That is the way.”
I scrunch my nose as I glance up. “What way?”
He smiles, and his dimples reappear. “The way of the prior owner who told
me to water them only at sunset, and that I should never forget.”
I shrugged. “What would happen if you forgot?”
His stare takes on a faraway look. “These are special plants that must be
watered the same time every day or else they will die.”
“Amazing,” I murmur.
The setting sun lights the plants with an orange glow.
The sun retreats to its bed for the night.
The plants follow suit and drop hands, their leaves standing up straight.
“What happens now?” I ask.
He smiles. “They go to sleep.”
“Sweet.”
His dark blue gaze falls on me. “Would you like to accompany me
to dinner this evening?”
My head pops up. “Will you explain more about the plants?”
His dimples deepen. “Of course. And we can share our names.”
I giggled. “That’s right. I don’t know yours.”
“But I know yours, Amy.”
“How–?”
He takes my arm and places it in the crook of his. “All will be explained.”

The Husband Store

The joke is on us.

A brand new store has just opened in New York City that sells Husbands.
When women go to choose a husband, they have to follow the instructions at the entrance:
You may visit this store ONLY ONCE! There are 6 floors and the value of
the products increase as you ascend the flights. You may choose any item
from a particular floor, or may choose to go up to the next floor, but you
CANNOT go back down except to exit the building.
So, a woman goes to the Husband Store to find a husband.
The 1st floor sign on the door reads:
Floor 1: These men have jobs.
The 2nd floor sign reads:
Floor 2: These men have Jobs and Love Kids.
The 3rd floor sign reads:
Floor 3: These men have Jobs, Love Kids and are extremely good looking.
“Wow,” she thinks, but feels compelled to keep going.
She goes to the 4th floor and the sign reads:
Floor 4: These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, are Drop-dead Good Looking and help with Housework.
“Oh, mercy me!” she exclaims, “I can hardly stand it!”
Still, she goes to the 5th floor and sign reads:
Floor 5: These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, are Drop-dead Gorgeous, help with Housework and Have a Strong Romantic Streak.
She is so tempted to stay, but she goes to the 6th floor and the sign reads:
Floor 6: You are visitor 31,456,012 to this floor.
There are no men on this floor.
This floor exists solely as proof that women are impossible to please.
Thank you for shopping at the Husband Store.
To avoid gender bias charges, the store’s owner opens a New Wives store just across the street.
The 1st first floor has wives that love sex.
The 2nd floor has wives that love sex and have money.
The 3rd,4th, 5th and 6th floors have never been visited.

EXCERPT FROM THE DEAD GAME

EXCERPT FROM THE DEAD GAME
Louise was being stalked by dark shadows at night. One day, she noticed a fleeting shadow in her store right before the door locked. She was trapped in her store without air to breathe. She was able to escape by throwing a store mannequin through the glass window. Now the mannequin was back for her.
Louise experienced a very unsettling and heavy uneasiness weighing down upon her the whole day, even though she tried to appear cheerful and upbeat for her customers. Her store looked perfect again…thanks to Tom and Edward’s repair work, but inside she felt torn up.
She had hidden away the mannequin—which she’d thrown through the front window to escape the locked store—in the back room behind all her stored merchandise. She had no desire ever to see it again: it would always remind her of being locked in an airless room. Like a sealed tomb.
She returned from the back room and was shocked to come face to face with the same mannequin that she’d just packed away. It was back in its original spot—right smack in the middle of the store. She gazed in wonder at its porcelain face, shocked to see that its expression had changed from a pleasant smiling one to a mockingly evil one. She dragged it back to the storage room, burying it far back behind everything else, and then locked the room’s steel door.
She feared that she was losing control of her life. She was imagining that her store had joined forces with the dark shadows of the night in their demented crusade against her. She was dreading this evening’s party even more than before, praying that it turned out to be just a simple party. However, in her heart she knew that this was not to be the case—that all their lives would be changed forever after tonight.

THE MANNEQUINS COME ALIVE!

blackkissbjd:

In Oasis, Florida horror lurks behind every shadow. Even in Louise’s store, the mannequins come alive to torment her.

Chapter 5

The next morning, Louise arrived early at her store. As soon as she stepped through the doorway, she sensed that something was wrong: the air was frigid and the lights wouldn’t turn on. From the corner of her eye she noticed a shadow pass by her. She was terrified that the creeping shadows were now stalking her inside and in the daylight.
She grabbed the door handle but found that it wouldn’t budge in either direction. She stared through the door’s plate glass window and began to realize that the town was deserted. All the other stores along Main Street were still closed, except for the sheriff’s office, which was too far away to be of any help. She was all alone with no one around to save her. If she cried out for help, no one could possibly hear her.
She felt panic beginning to overwhelm her. She couldn’t breathe; it felt like all the oxygen in the room had been sucked out. She began gasping for breaths of air, but there didn’t seem to be any left in the locked store. She scanned the store for something to help her break the front window but only found the display of mannequins. She rushed over to one of the mannequins and threw it head first through the window. Sharp shards of glass sprayed across the outside pavement and fresh air flowed into the store.
She gulped in huge breaths of air and climbed through the broken glass. She threw glances up and down the streets, but couldn’t detect any signs of movement.
She ran all the way home without informing the sheriff’s office about the intruder in her store. She decided not to tell anyone what had really happened—not even the sheriff—since she didn’t know who to believe in anymore.
She didn’t believe that the sheriff had ever investigated any of the strange sightings or unsolved disappearances.
From that moment on, Louise decided not to trust anyone or to confide her fears to anyone in town ever again. She would become an island to herself: strong and self-sufficient. She didn’t even trust Todd any longer: he was too chummy with the sheriff and the original residents. She suspected that these residents were the ones responsible for the unknown creatures stalking her and all the other unexplained incidents in town.
When the call finally came from the sheriff’s office later that day to inform her of the break-in at her store, she managed to sound surprised and concerned. She even returned to the store with the sheriff to check out the extent of the damage, informing him that nothing had been stolen. She then arranged to have Tom and Edward fix the window. No one had commented on the fact that the store mannequin and the broken glass had been on the outside of the store. And this didn’t surprise her at all.
