EXCERPT FROM THE DEAD GAME

Just when Linda and her friends thought they were safe, they were hit once again by unknown, dark forces.

Chapter 37

They stepped outside into the sun. The town turned dark with hovering black clouds. The mountain rumbled and shook. Trees began to sway with their frightened leaves flying from their trembling branches. Loud blasts of thunder surrounded them from all sides. The sky above End House lit up with bright flashes of red and orange lights. In the opposite direction, above the dark mansion, sizzling lightning bolts were streaking across the blackened sky.
David said, “What now?” They made a mad dash to their cars.
Todd said, “We will meet at the mansion. That’s where the eye of the storm is focused.”
Their cars raced past the estates, speeding along the dirt path by the bed and breakfast, spewing gravel and dirt everywhere. The gingerbread house was lit up. People were streaming out the front door. Linda didn’t recognize any of them, but suspected that they were Abe and Anna’s missing children.
They drove up to the mansion, and the storm intensified even further until the entire sky was lit up with lights as bright and colorful as a fireworks display. At each of the many windows, faces could be seen grinning at them. They didn’t appear to be human faces. Their elongated, white faces were stretched out like Silly Putty. Their oversized green eyes were glowing in the darkness behind each open window.
Abe and his people caught up to them at the mansion. They stood behind their group as they watched the bizarre scene before them. They wore long overcoats over their dark clothes. Linda was intrigued to see what they had on beneath their coats. Maybe they were armed with special weapons.
“Those are the vampires that we must now extinguish,” Abe said in a loud voice above the roaring storm.
“How are we going to accomplish this feat?” Linda asked, skeptical of him and his family. Just what they needed now—a new gang of players thrown into the old, uncertain mix.
“I’m waiting for the priest, and then all will be explained.”
Linda wasn’t satisfied with that answer, but kept silent and waited with the others.
Father John arrived soon after. Abe walked over to him and they spoke for a while.
Linda said to Shana, “I bet that’s where Natalie and Maxell hung out: in the deserted mansion with the demonic shadows that stalked us in town.”
“Imagine. A whole vampires’ nest right inside our own town. If I’d known about this, I would never have slept at night.”

DEAD AND BURIED

The house stands
alone and deserted,
dark and forlorn.
The moon casts its glow
through the tall windows.
Shadows fall on the
shiny wood floors.
Mice scurry from sight.
Dust mites fly through the air.
The wind whistles through
the cavernous rooms.
Rooms that had once held people,
furniture, and signs of life.
Signs of laughter and hope.
Now the house sits alone and dark.
What could have brought it
to such an end?
Has death entered this house?
Bringing with it sickness and sorrows.
Or has the family simply moved away?
A house holds secrets,
close to its heart.
Secrets that lie buried
beneath its floors
and foundations.
Be careful where you dig.
You might not like
what you find.

TAKE ME TO THE CHURCH

Take me to the church.
The town's on fire.
Hell has let loose its demons.

Take me to the church.
The Town Hall has lost its windows.
The Dead are taking over the town.

Take me to the church.
I want to live.
I refuse to become one of The Dead.
We must run for shelter.

Take me to the church.
I can see the church.
It's standing strong against the storm.
Its door is standing open.
Welcoming us.
Let's go inside.

Take me to the church.
Hell is raining down upon us.
Creatures are stalking us.

Take me to the church.
The church is gone
in a puff of smoke.
It stands no more.
Only a blackened shell
of its former self.

Take me away.
The Dead have won.
They always do.

Take me away from here.
Amen.

End House sits alone and deserted.
Its shutters torn and hanging
from its broken windows.
Furniture upended.
Shattered pictures.
Shattered dreams.
What happened to the family
living here?
Open the door.
Walk up the battered staircase.
Past the broken statues.
Where did the family disappear to?

A BIRD

mstrkrftz:
Rise and Shine by Sabir Ayaz

To keep flying.
Or to join my friends.
So many choices.
All are good.
The sun is setting.
I can feel its warmth
on my feathers.
While the warm breeze ruffles them.
The water looks calm.
I can see my friends swimming
with the current.
They look content and happy.
What a beautiful day
to be alive.
To be a bird.

THE PHONE CALL

The phone call.
I’ve been on hold
for a long time.
Years have passed.
But I’m still waiting.
One day I will have
my answer.
One day someone will
answer me.
But I will keep waiting
until the end of time.

A PERFECT NIGHT

A nice night.
A perfect night for a walk.
The moon is shining.
The stars are twinkling.
The graveyard is eerie.
What?
There’s a mist weaving
through the graves.
A whistling sound in the air.
Followed by a cold wind.
What’s happening?
There are figures standing up.
They are rising from the graves.
And they all seem to be looking
at me.
Why?
They are now walking
toward me.
Time to end my walk.
They’ve surrounded me.
How did they move so fast?
They are transparent.
I can see through them.
A dark figure is standing
behind them.
A figure that isn’t transparent.
With a knife in his hand.
Time to run.
Too late.
A not so perfect night.

THE QUESTION

What is reality?
Do we see what is
actually around us?
Or is there a another reality?
A reality that we can’t see;
that we aren’t ready to see yet.
Will it ever come into focus?
Into a clarity that will reveal all.
The reason for our existence.
The reason for the world
as we know it.
Look closer.
Peer through the murkiness.
Find your own reality.

INTO THE WOODS

elinka: Olari Ionut

The trees are alive.
They are moving.
They are surrounding me.
Touching me with
their skinny arms.
Throwing leaves
in my face.
They are now circling me.
Their arms reaching
up to the sky.
Closing off the light.
Blocking the sun.
Why is this happening?
What did I do to deserve this?
Hey!
Stop touching me.
Stop pulling on me.
What’s that sound?
A high-pitched sound.
Oh.
That’s my alarm clock.

DO YOU LIKE WHAT YOU SEE?

Do you like what you see
in the mirror every morning?
Is it revealing a hidden secret,
buried deep inside yourself?
A horror that no one can ever see.
A feeling.
A thought.
So repulsive that
it must never see
the light of day.
Keep it hidden behind
your pretty face.
For no one to ever suspect.
What are you hiding?

VIEW FROM A WINDOW

Open the window.
Let the fresh air inside.
Look out at the bright lights.
The people hurrying on the streets.
The tall buildings.
Are people asleep behind the dark windows?
Are there parties being thrown behind the lit ones?
So much activity.
So much to see.
What is that?
A shooting star.
A sure sign that we are never alone.

WAITING FOR YOU

Does End House call to you?
Is it beckoning for you to enter?
The door is opening.
It’s slightly ajar.
The darkness inside
is waiting for you.
Waiting for its next victim.
Are there creatures trapped
in its walls?
Humans caught in its dungeons?
Come inside.
We are all waiting for you.
Candles will light your way.
Down the slippery steps
to the basement.
Or maybe upstairs to
the revolving rooms.
Revolving to reveal
one horror after another.
Come on and let’s party.
The Dead love their games.
Who is their fearless leader?
The evil one controlling the town.
Clues abound,
waiting for you to find.
So many questions.
So little time.

FLY AWAY

Help me!
I want to fly.
I want to spread my wings.
Look!
I’m flapping them.
Flapping them real hard.
I want to fly far away,
over land and water,
and way from people.
Let go of me!
I want to be free!

A WINTER WONDERLAND

The gate is open.
I’m going inside.
I wonder who owns this property.
Is it some computer wizard
or maybe a movie star?
For now, it’s mine.
It is quiet and deserted.
No footsteps in the snow,
besides mine.
The trees extend far into the distance.
All I can see is white and more white.
A winter wonderland
created just for me.
I hear a rumbling sound
coming from beneath me.
It’s not beneath me
but next to me.
Two Doberman Pinschers
are growling up at me.
"Zeus, Apollo?"
More growling.
Time to run.
For my life.

THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS

What is my nightmare?
I’m in an office building,
somewhere in New York City.
I hear explosions.
I look out the window.
Planes are dropping bombs.
Buildings are bursting into flames.
People are screaming around me.
I run down the stairs,
caught in a mass of people.
All intent on escaping.
To where, we don’t know.
I run down the streets.
Bombs keep falling.
I see a bridge in the distance.
Then it’s gone.
It exploded.
All that’s left are flames.
What is happening?
Are we under attack?
I close my eyes.
I open them again.
I can see my room.
Thank god it was only a nightmare.
I swear I could still smell the smoke.
A strange holiday nightmare.

PARTY IN A GLASS HOUSE

A party in a green-glassed house.
The lighted trees show the way.
Snow is falling.
Music wafts from inside the round house.
Guests can be seen dancing
beneath the crystal chandeliers.
Their images are reflected on the
sparkling, glass walls.
Champagne will be flowing.
And so will blood.
When the clock strikes midnight,
beware!
The dance floor will empty out,
leaving only the humans behind.
It will be time for fun and games.
At whose expense?
Come and find out.

HAUNTED PARTY OF THE DEAD

A party in a remote house.
Imagine the fun we’re going to have.
A surprise party just for us.
It’s dark inside.
But look at the staircase,
sweeping upward.
It has creepy, gargoyle posts.
Look over there!
Candles are lighting
the right hallway.
Let’s follow them.
Where will they take us?
I guess we’re going
down to the basement.
Now we’re in trouble.
The basement door just
slammed shut behind us.
It’s locked.
We might as well go
down the stairs.
Wait.
Why are my feet are wet?
I’m standing in
a pool of cold water.
What’s that noise?
It sounds like machines
are about to fall on us.
Oh no!
Cages are descending
from the ceiling.
They have pointy edges.
Circular saws are
sweeping across the water.
Looking for heads to chop off.
Tom is down!
He’s submerged in the water;
his skinny neck exposed to the saws.
We’re in a dark hell
or The Dead’s version of hell.
The saws are moving closer to us.
Help!
The Dead leave no survivors.

WINTER COLD

I feel so cold.
Ice is forming on my arms.
I see fewer animals and birds.
What is happening to me?
Why are my leaves drying up?
Ouch.
A cold wind just hit me in the face.
I wish I could hide.
But I’m stuck in place.
Waiting.
And waiting.
I think I fell asleep.
For the sun is out.
My ice is melting.
The breeze is now warmer.
It’s brushing the snow
off my cold arms.
My arms feel less heavy.
Soon it will be spring.
Time for celebration.
I can’t wait to see my
green leaves again.
Birds will return to
sit on my arms.
They will build their nests.
And life will be good.
Only a few short months left.
I will take another snooze.
See you in the spring.
